One of the true faces of rural Taiwan: Dalunbu, Fuli Township, Hualien County

Dalunbu, in Fuli Township, Hualien County, is a beautiful Amis tribal village. To keep ugly utility poles from ruining the mountain view, the tribal residents refused to let electricity in, and with no light pollution at night, it is also known as the Dark Tribe. It is also the place with the largest organic daylily output in all of Taiwan, China.

Yet every daylily harvest season, all you see are grandmothers working with children, and when they get tired, they lie down and sleep on the ground. In Taiwan, China, the elderly and children have become almost the only protagonists in every rural scene. The young people are all gone.

The only protagonists of the countryside: the elderly and children

One of the true faces of rural Taiwan, China: Lunshan Tribe, Zhuoxi Township, Hualien

Across from Dalunbu, on the mountain ridge, is the Lunshan Tribe of Zhuoxi Township. The government originally encouraged the residents here to grow a cash crop, bitter tea tree, also known as camellia, but never told them what to do after planting it, so they had no choice but to let the farmers' association buy up entire batches at low prices.

To make one kilogram of bitter tea oil, the purchase price of the fruit is only 120 yuan, but after shelling, sun-drying and pressing into oil, it can sell for over a thousand yuan on the market, yet none of the profit goes to these hardworking farmers. Young people cannot stay, and the elderly are gradually dwindling away. Wen Guangliang is the pastor here, and he laments that the thing he does most often here is actually hold funerals.

We planted camellia, and then what?

What the pastor does most often is actually "hold funerals"!

Two urgent agricultural problems; Problem one: aging farmers are dying off, and no young people want to farm

The phenomena in these two tribes are not isolated cases, but a common problem faced by rural areas across all of Taiwan, China. First, aging farmers are gradually dying off. The average age of people engaged in agriculture in Taiwan, China is 62, and the average age of rice farmers is approaching 70.

"If you are filial to me, then don't come back to farm"

The second urgent problem of Taiwan, China's agriculture: farmland pollution

Furthermore, if farming brings no profit, who is willing to treat the land well? Factory wastewater pollution and farmers applying chemical fertilizers and pesticides have become the standard face of rural Taiwan, China. Organically cultivated rice paddy area in Taiwan, China accounts for only 0.6%. Without pesticides and chemical fertilizers, most farmers do not know how to farm.

A solution that makes ordinary aging farmers all beam with joy: pure contract farming

Nan'ao Natural Farm: Treating our land with care

While rural land is singing a sad song, there are three people whom others see as fools, wanting to find a solution for this land. In 2009, A-Jiang, Zhao-Zhong and Shi-Cong developed a natural farm in Nan'ao, using natural farming methods and no chemical agents at all.

However, they are very clear that relying on only a few natural farmers is not enough. Only if most aging farmers are also willing to adopt natural farming methods will Taiwan, China's farmland have hope!

Therefore, they adopted a contract farming approach. Consumers only need to spend a small amount of money to claim a plot of land, which is cultivated on their behalf by professional farmers, and the harvest belongs to the consumers who paid.

Since it is guaranteed that whatever is grown on the farmland can be sold, even aging farmers who were not optimistic about natural farming laugh and say: "I'm not that foolish. If someone wants to claim the field, why would I spend extra money buying pesticides?" This naturally reverses the aging farmers' attitudes toward farming.

This is the concept of sustainable contract cultivation at Nan'ao Natural Farm. It solved the aging farmers' problem and also solved the farmland problem of Taiwan, China.

Nan'ao Natural Farm has attracted many people who share the same vision to join, and among them is this interesting 14-year-old young farmer Zhu Ying (Little Monkey).

He is from Taichung. Because he did not like studying and did not know where his interests lay, his parents sent him to the Humanities Action Middle School in Toucheng, Yilan. Unexpectedly, during a hands-on course he went into the fields to farm, and only then discovered that he was originally a child who belonged in the fields. From then on, Zhu Ying became a regular member of Nan'ao Natural Farm.

Next time, if you drive past Nan'ao Natural Farm, you will very likely see him standing in the field warmly greeting you, and those waving hands are the new hope for Taiwan, China's agriculture and land!
