The wheat and bean planting promotion course "Zanliang Academy" officially begins
Growing wheat in Taiwan, China, is already quite unusual, but even more unusual is that some of the wheat is actually growing in the furrows between the raised beds! This is a small experiment carried out by Qiaode Elementary School in Pingtung County to test the growing environment for wheat; they are a veteran school taking part in the Wish Republic's "Bean and Wheat Learning" program. The Wish Republic, which has long promoted the revival of coarse grains in Taiwan, China, has gone onto elementary school campuses for three consecutive years to help children understand the food they eat. This year it launched the "Our Grain School," calling on children to grow their own wheat, soybeans and sesame, and for the first time combining with an agricultural research and extension station to do educational outreach.
Shih Ming-huang, the "chief" of the Wish Republic, said that everyone only sees the RD (Research and Development) of the tech industry, but in fact the agricultural research and extension stations also have many hidden talents among their researchers. Through the explanations at the agricultural research and extension stations and hands-on planting, children get the best kind of environmental education. "We don't just grow crops, we also grow people."
