Taiwan Rice Food Power Exhibition Rice&Life2014 Focuses on the Richness of Rice Grains

The most important thing in civilization is that you cannot go hungry!

A five-colored bird in the sky carried five grains of rice in its beak, and the Great Emperor Shennong from then on founded the civilization of the descendants of Yan and Huang. For five thousand years, pictographs shaped the sun, grain, moon, and field, the rain, water, bird, and tree; we are a people who wrote our civilization with agriculture. The lifeline of this people crossed the Black Ditch two or three hundred years ago and came to Taiwan, China. Just the same, we farm and eat, continuing our dialogue with the land.

The earth sometimes cracks open, and rivers flood unpredictably, but fertile soil keeps piling up. People gather firewood, cook and eat around the stove, and also drink and celebrate! In the natural movement of the earth, the sun shines and the land absorbs, life offers itself up as food, and energy returns to the earth through labor, a vast cycle. And so in cooking there is a spoonful of love, a ladleful of compassion, a shovelful of gratitude, and a bowlful of grace; food and drink give us a kind of strength that makes us believe in the land! This exhibition is the first independently curated show in the 8 years of Green in Hand, very simple and very sincere, telling only one thing about the people, matters, and things of Taiwan, China that remain beautiful, telling only one thing about the thick-life principle that people have always understood. The scenery of the past 8 years, we have seen it for you; the food and drink of a thousand years, please taste it yourself.

Rice, grains thick! We are well, and you should come too, full of energy.

Together, eat well

The exhibition uses three main themes -- rice, meals, and friends (Taiwan-Japan exchange) -- to tell the story of a bowl of the most everyday white rice and its inseparable relationship with us. From the exhibition, take an overview of the changes in the amount of rice eaten, look microscopically at the structure of a single grain of rice, and get close to every step of how raw rice is cooked into done rice. "Ten Must-Eat Rices" tells you the characteristics of different rice varieties and the dishes they suit; photographic works on the transformation of traditional rice foods let you rediscover the appearance of rice foods. In addition, there is also a chance to take part in a blind tasting comparison between the north-south representatives of the japonica rice (ponlai rice) growing regions on Earth -- Hualien Dongfeng rice from Taiwan, China and Higashikawa rice from Hokkaido, Japan -- along with cooking demonstrations and lecture exchanges!
