Introduction to the Taichung Smileing Dawn Organic Market
On the great lawn of the Taichung Executive Yuan Joint Service Center, fresh green tents gleam in the sunlight, and inside each tent is an organic farm with a rich organic history, where a group of smiling organic farmers happily promote the organic philosophy to passing visitors.
This is the Smileing Dawn Organic Farmers Market that opened on December 13, 2013 (ROC year 102), because the former chief executive of the Central Joint Service Center, Mr. Tang Guotai, wanted to look after organic small farmers and employees, and so assisted the "Taiwan Ecological Farming and Natural Diet Promotion Association, a juridical association of the Republic of China" in establishing the market. The association invited all organic farms in central Taiwan to join the market, hoping to directly support the sales of central Taiwan's organic farmers, and to promote a low-food-mileage consumption model and consumer food-and-farming education. The market team hopes to gather a group of high-quality, dedicated farmers to work together for Taiwan's future environment, and therefore personally visited every invited organic farm, climbing high mountains and walking small paths, to understand the motives and intentions behind each farmer's commitment to organic, listening to the farmers' grannies recount one touching story after another, truly and honestly feeling the story of farmers using their lives to strive for the environment of the next generation.
Besides farmers' fresh organic tea, coffee, short-term leafy vegetables, root crops, rice, sprouts, and seasonal fruits, the market also has farmers' homemade dried-fruit bread made from their own crops, rice crackers, wood ear fungus drink, purely handmade eco-friendly cleaning products, handmade soap, chili sauce, and seasonal friendly fruit juice; while buying vegetables, you can also leisurely and comfortably chat with the organic farmers about everyday matters.
In "Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above," there are breathtakingly beautiful and vast mountains and rivers, yet it also lets us witness the sorrow on the island of Formosa.
