Why was what the rural old man said right again
The worst-hit field was Uncle Lu's. A valley facing the sea, plus the same 'No. 5' variety as Uncle Shui-quan, meant it was almost completely wiped out, flattened in the water. Uncle Lu quietly propped up the rice in the field. Though all his hard work was soaked in the water, there was no complaint from him; he only said mildly, "The wind was too strong, and 'No. 5' is too soft-stemmed." The rice he had propped up looked like a long braid. The sight of Uncle Lu bent over his work was beautiful, but painfully so.
For farmers and rice, this really was a hard year. Uncle Liu turned out to be right after all. Yet whether it was pests or the effects of the typhoon, the farmers always stayed calm; only then did we understand that Uncle Liu's prediction at the start of the year was just a kind of divination. Good year or bad year, they accept it all. For them, good and bad always take turns. How much heaven gives cannot be forced; as long as they have done their best, the rest is up to heaven.
