A little banana fabric-dyeing trip: experiencing a lifestyle attitude of eating what you can wear

The banana feels very different today.

When we visited Wanzi of the Youth Banana team, who works on plant dyeing and handcrafted cloth, she happily shared how much valuable failure and frustration there is in the process of researching banana plant dyeing. As for the colors of banana dye, in most people's eyes they are simply the color of being splashed by banana sap, but in Wanzi's skillful hands, iron gray, yuppie gray and bronze brown represent not only banana but also fashionable and warm colors. "The banana feels very different today." At the start of the plant dyeing, everyone guessed that the color dyed from bananas would mostly be imagined as yellow, because bananas give people a feeling of lively brilliance. Yet in the end, what everyone dyed turned out to be so calm and textured, and each person's imagination of the banana was overturned.

The banana is a fruit and also a way of life.

Taiwan is rich in produce, with many kinds of plants and insects, but if the things that grow locally are not developed and put to use, it would be a great pity to have these features and do nothing with them. In Southeast Asia, one can from time to time see the creation of banana coffee, banana rice crackers, banana pancakes and banana fiber cloth, and Taiwan has such good features that it would surely be a great pity not to use them. Through the efforts of the Youth Banana partners, banana features are being created, wanting to be different every day, yet every day also being only the same.

After the Hope Banana Garden of natural farming was established, the agricultural development of bananas and the cultural and creative development of bananas have kept advancing along with the footsteps of Youth Banana. This is a journey without an end, because both the starting point and the endpoint are here. The banana industry of Qishan, an attitude that can be eaten and worn, is simply life. We turn the dirty color of bananas into this kind of dyed-cloth feature. Come on a little banana journey, and you will find your eyes light up and your view is different.
