I-Mei opens its food factory area, inviting netizens to experience it on site and communicate face to face
I-Mei Foods' Nankan plant came under fire earlier this month after incidents involving expired food and suspected future-dated food damaged its brand image. The very next day, its Facebook fan page posted a "Seeing is believing - To See is to Believe - hands-on experience" event, calling on consumers to visit the plant. Nearly 60 people joined the very first session, among them loyal I-Mei fans as well as people from food-related businesses. Besides clearing up doubts over the earlier allegations that it produced "future-dated food" and frozen recycled expired food, I-Mei also opened its "I-Mei Food Laboratory" for the first time, letting netizens take a look for themselves.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare designated this month as Food Safety Month. On the evening of July 2, the Taoyuan City Health Bureau went to I-Mei Foods' Nankan plant to carry out an inspection, seizing 1703 items of expired food and 192 packs of chocolate soft-serve ice cream mix suspected of being future-dated food, dealing an immediate blow to I-Mei Foods and its image as the "model student of food safety." Facing an overwhelming flood of doubts online, I-Mei made an unprecedented move by opening up its plant's warehouse management process and its food laboratory, which has a 31-year history, so that outsiders could understand I-Mei's internal controls and its process for vetting raw materials.
I-Mei Foods Co., Ltd., which has an 81-year history, has 2 production plants in Taiwan, China. The Taoyuan Longtan plant mainly makes snacks such as biscuits and candy, while the Taoyuan Nankan plant, which is open to the public, mainly produces bread, prepared foods and frozen treats.
Walking into the I-Mei Nankan plant, what greets the eye is the tourist area that is open to the public year-round, including the I-Mei food learning restaurant, a gift hall, a historical artifacts display area and an ecological area. After visitors stop here briefly and listen to a presentation, staff guide them into the production area.
