According to the Council of Agriculture's agricultural statistics, in 2015 (the 104th year of the Republic of China calendar) Taiwan's pork supply reached 96.2% and poultry meat supply reached 91.1%, with production almost meeting the nation's demand for meat. But according to current agricultural statistics, the feed used to raise economically important animals relies on imports, and nearly all of it is GM feed! Feed grains are the biggest gap in the nation's food self-sufficiency rate!

Imported GM corn and GM soybeans, with their low-cost advantage, have left Taiwan's feed companies with little choice but to depend on them to stay competitive. This has squeezed the room for growth of feed crops grown in Taiwan, and many fields are left fallow rather than planted. Promoting domestic feed grains certainly means emphasizing non-GMO cultivation, and we also need to start emphasizing animal products raised on non-GMO feed, which requires careful thought about product differentiation. Do such products have good market segmentation? When consumers buy livestock products raised on 'domestic non-GMO feed,' they can expect healthier livestock products, and this can also help raise the food self-sufficiency rate and sustain the nation's agricultural vitality, killing two birds with one stone.

The GMO-free Alliance has promoted the non-GMO issue since 2008, starting with GMO-free farming areas, moving to consumer education in 2013, and further driving policy and legislative regulation in 2014. As society's awareness of the non-GMO issue grows, the industry chain has changed along with it: there are more and more non-GMO products, the area of domestic soybean recultivation grows every year, and some producers have even begun to pay attention to the GM feed problem. Therefore, starting in 2016 the GMO-free Alliance extended its attention on the GM issue to domestic non-GMO feed such as soybeans and corn, hoping to generate more discussion of the domestic non-GMO industry chain.

In 2017, the Taiwan GMO-free Alliance will hold the 'Domestic Non-GMO Feed Symposium' in October, to encourage people to pay attention to the non-GMO feed issue.
