How to choose high-quality orchid potting medium? Master these key points
Sphagnum moss, also known as peat moss, is a plant of the genus Sphagnum in the family Sphagnaceae. It mostly grows on rocky cliffs in temperate and cold-temperate forests or beside streams and springs. Fresh sphagnum moss is white-green or bright green, loose and cotton-like, densely interwoven into patches, with creeping appressed stems that have irregular or pinnate branches, and the stems and branch leaves are nearly uniform in shape. After cleaning and drying, sphagnum moss is pale white, soft, and loose, with a large water absorption capacity; it can absorb 15 to 20 times its own weight in water, while also having strong water retention and air permeability.
The most ideal growing medium for orchids
Orchidaceae plants, especially tropical orchids, are mostly epiphytic orchids with well-developed root systems, requiring a growing medium with good physical stability, excellent looseness and air permeability, and water and fertilizer retention capacity. At first, people did not know that sphagnum moss was the most ideal growing medium for Orchidaceae plants, until Taiwan, China successfully used sphagnum moss as a growing medium for large-scale Phalaenopsis production, and people discovered that sphagnum moss had good results such as a high survival rate, fast growth, low cost, and environmental friendliness. With the vigorous development of the Phalaenopsis industry in the mainland, and as more and more sphagnum moss was developed and utilized, people began to understand the excellent characteristics of sphagnum moss as a medium, namely that the material is clean and free of pathogens; it has good water retention, drainage, and aeration; it is not prone to rotting and can be used for a long time; and it is convenient to use. In addition, sphagnum moss also contains rich organic matter and various nutrient elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and iron, which can save on fertilizer application. Some orchid growers have tested that using sphagnum moss to grow orchids gives a shoot emergence rate 30% to 50% higher than using ordinary potting medium.
How to identify high-quality sphagnum moss
Generally speaking, sphagnum moss growing in shady places or on backlit hillsides is pure green, with relatively tender branches and leaves, epidermal cells that are more likely to become brittle, average water absorption, poor air permeability, easy souring and spoilage, and relatively ordinary quality; sphagnum moss growing under strong light or on sunny hillsides is red, about 8 to 10 cm long, with relatively thick and sturdy branches and leaves, and good physical stability. Most sphagnum moss sold on the market is packaged in compressed blocks, making it difficult to judge its quality. So how should you choose good sphagnum moss? You can refer to the following two methods:
Method 1: Tap lightly and observe whether there are crumbs
High-quality sphagnum moss has a high degree of structural integrity and, after compression, is regular and compact, without breakage or pulverization. You can hold it in your hand, tilt one corner, and tap the bag lightly to observe whether a lot of crumbs fall into the corner of the bag. Sphagnum moss with too many fragments is of poorer quality.
Method 2: Check the packaging
Some domestically produced sphagnum moss uses immature or smaller-grade sphagnum moss, and its physical properties are relatively unstable. By comparison, imported sphagnum moss has relatively stable physical properties and is of better quality, especially dried sphagnum moss produced in places such as New Zealand and Chile, which is of better quality. If you need to buy higher-quality sphagnum moss, you can choose some imported sphagnum moss.
Correct methods for using sphagnum moss
Sphagnum moss from different producing areas differs in its physical and chemical properties, such as thickness, length, and pH, and there are also particular ways to use it. Generally, high-quality sun-facing sphagnum moss is suitable for planting small seedlings, while backlit and inferior sphagnum moss is suitable for planting medium and large seedlings; thicker sphagnum moss should be planted more firmly, and finer sphagnum moss should be planted more loosely; weaker sphagnum moss is not recommended for use. In addition, it is recommended to soak and wash it thoroughly before use, and to disinfect it when necessary; adhere to an irrigation method that combines moisture and drainage. When planting orchids, watering should follow “water when dry, stop when wet,” so that the sphagnum moss is less likely to accumulate salts and sour and spoil, thereby giving full play to ideal fertilizer retention, water retention, and air permeability.
