Growth Habits of Wintersweet
Wintersweet likes sunlight, can tolerate shade, and dislikes waterlogging. Wintersweet flowers can bloom proudly in frost and snow, with yellow flowers like wax and a strong fragrance, and are a major flowering tree for winter viewing. Wintersweet is cold-hardy and can safely overwinter when temperatures are not below -15°C; it can be cultivated in the open ground in areas south of Beijing, but if the flowering period encounters a low temperature of -10°C, the flowers will suffer cold damage.
Wintersweet usually grows in deep, fertile, loose, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam, and grows poorly on saline-alkali soil.
Wintersweet has relatively strong drought tolerance and is afraid of waterlogging, so do not water too frequently when caring for it at home. The tree has strong growth vigor and vigorous branching, and the root crown easily produces suckers. It tolerates pruning and is easy to shape. It flowers before leafing out, with a flowering period from 11 month ~ the following 3 month, and matures in 7~8 month.
