How to grow fine-leaved verbena? Growing methods and precautions

Flowers & Gardening By Emily Carter 0 views

I. Growing methods

1. Temperature

It is fairly resistant to severe cold; in winter it can tolerate temperatures of minus five degrees, and some can even tolerate minus ten degrees. Those varieties growing near the Yangtze River basin can overwinter outdoors. It grows well at 5 to 25 degrees Celsius, but 16 degrees Celsius is best for it.

2. Light

It does not like shady areas; it only grows well with good light, its branches and leaves grow very densely, and its flowers are also very bright and beautiful, so we should place it in a spot with good light for growing.

3. Watering

Once grown, verbena has very strict water requirements: it must have water but not too much, so this must be strictly controlled. Once grown it is fairly drought-tolerant, but if it is summer and the temperature is very high, it still needs frequent watering.

If the soil is too dry the branches and leaves will wither; if there is too much water, the leaves will grow very densely, few flowers will grow, the leaves will turn yellow, and the roots may even rot and die, so during the plum rain season, drain the water from its potting soil in time.

4. Fertilizing

While it is growing, add fertilizer once every fifteen days. If it is still a seedling, use nitrogen fertilizer when fertilizing, so the leaves will grow luxuriantly. If it is about to bloom, add phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, so the flowering period will be longer and the flowers will also be very beautiful. After it has grown, be sure not to use only nitrogen fertilizer, otherwise the nutrients will all be taken up by the leaves and the number of flowers will decrease.

5. Pruning

If the seedling grows to ten to twelve cm, pinch out its growing tip, so that more branches will grow. Of course, some varieties naturally branch abundantly and do not need pinching. If the branches are too long, they can be cut shorter, so the overall shape will look better.

II. Precautions

1. If it is placed in a dark and rainy place for a long time, its leaves will be very sparse, the number of flowers will be very small, and the flower color will be very pale and not very beautiful. So it is best to choose an area with good light for planting.

2. If growing it as a potted plant, you can use a flower pot with a diameter of fifteen to twenty cm, and each pot can hold three to five plants.
