Reasons and Solutions for Azalea Leaf Drop in Winter
1. Caused by the environment
Leaf drop in general may be caused by environmental factors. Azaleas sold on the market are basically grown in greenhouses, so when you bring one home it usually needs time to get used to the home environment, and leaf drop and even death often occur. To solve this, you should ensure adequate air humidity, provide appropriate shade, and keep the potting soil slightly moist; at the same time give it proper ventilation, but do not let cold wind blow directly on it. Do not rush to repot or fertilize. In winter it also needs plenty of light, so when growing it indoors try to place it under a south-facing window, and the ambient temperature must not be lower than 5°C. Also do not move it around arbitrarily, to prevent temperature changes. But do not put it in a place with relatively poor, stale air.
2. Improper fertilization
If you fertilize improperly, it can also easily cause problems with the leaves. You should know that in winter the plant's physiological activity weakens, so if the fertilizer concentration is too high, it will be relatively easy for its leaves to drop. Therefore at this time we should apply a little thin liquid fertilizer.
3. Improper watering
Another reason for its leaf drop may be poor watering. The plant's root system is also relatively fine and not very drought-tolerant. In winter water evaporates slowly, and watering too much or too little is both bad, which can easily make its leaves drop.
4. Caused by the soil
Azaleas are among the flowers that prefer acidic soil, but frequent watering will make the soil become alkaline, and then it cannot survive, which will easily make it drop leaves. The soil for azaleas must always be acidic soil with good aeration, and normally you should also appropriately add a little fertilizer for the azalea, so that the soil for growing azaleas can be kept normal.
5. Seasonal transition
Another possibility is that due to a sudden drop in temperature, the plant reduces the water in its body to protect itself, thus causing a physiological reaction. In this case it can recover on its own after a period of time!
