Common Pests and Diseases of Fernleaf Hedge Bamboo and Their Control Methods

Flowers & Gardening By Emily Carter 0 views

Disease: Leaf Spot

Main Symptoms

This disease mainly harms the leaves of the plant. In the early stage, multiple small yellow spots appear on the leaf surface. These spots slowly expand until they all join together, at which point the leaves are almost entirely necrotic. The disease almost always first appears at the leaf edges or leaf tips. The onset period is from May to November, especially when temperatures are high and there is abundant rain. This disease can also spread via rainwater, expanding the area of damage.

Control Methods

During the plant's growth stage, try to avoid direct sun exposure, and move the plant indoors during the rainy season. When temperatures are high, cool it down. In daily care, fertilizer should be applied reasonably; do not fertilize blindly. When disease is detected, it can be sprayed with chemicals.

Pest: White-tailed mealybug

Occurrence Period

This pest occurs mainly in the south, especially in the Shanghai area, where it can occur up to three times a year: the first time in March, and the second and third times from June to July. This pest can persist until November. When the weather is colder, the pest can overwinter in the soil until March of the following year.

Control Methods

In early spring, spraying with chemicals can be used to prevent the pest in advance. In winter, when pruning the plant, all leaves affected by pests and diseases should be cut off and then cleaned up thoroughly. At the same time, the soil can be appropriately deep-dug, taking care not to damage the plant's roots. This can reduce the chance of pests overwintering in the soil.
