What are the propagation methods for Virginia creeper?
1. Sowing method
1. Seed treatment
Harvest its seeds in good time, then remove the peel and flesh still attached to them, wash them clean in water and let them dry. Next, store them in moist sandy soil for a winter (note the low temperature); this is the step of breaking seed dormancy.
2. Sowing time
After the seeds are collected, you can sow them around March of the following year.
3. Preparing the sowing site
After choosing the sowing site, level it, cover it with a layer of loose humus soil, and then water it thoroughly.
4. Specific method
First, take out the seeds and soak them in warm water at 45 degrees for two days. Sow the seeds mixed with sandy soil, and cover them with a layer of plastic film to keep them warm and moist. The seedlings should come up around early May. The success rate of propagation by sowing is relatively high, reaching more than 80 percent.
2. Cutting method
1. Material selection
Select healthy stems and vines, about 20 to 30 cm long is enough. You can also choose young shoots, but note that they should have leaves.
2. Time selection
Summer or autumn are both fine. Note that for young shoots it is best to choose summer.
3. Specific steps
If you choose the first type of material, you can insert it directly into the substrate and just keep it moist. If it is the second type of material, then it needs shade and watering, and new shoots will soon grow.
3. Layering method
We can use the "wave-shaped" layering method, which can be done during the rainy season, that is, in damp, cloudy weather, so the chance of survival is greater. If it is autumn, they can be separated for transplanting, and planted out in the following year.
