When the weather turns cold, move flowers and plants indoors promptly to prevent them from freezing to death

1. Classification by Degree of Cold Hardiness

Very cold-hardy plants, able to overwinter outdoors

Most cold-hardy flowers and plants originate from subarctic or temperate regions, mainly including some annual and biennial herbaceous flowers, some perennial and bulbous flowers, and deciduous and evergreen woody ornamental flowers. They can generally withstand low temperatures of -10 degrees C, and some can withstand lows of around -20 degrees C, so they can overwinter in the open ground across most of northern China.

Representative plants: lilac, peach blossom, elm-leaved spirea (Prunus triloba), purple hosta, daylily, Shandan lily, perennial phlox, hollyhock, wild rose, rose, lilac, crabapple, elm-leaved spirea, honeysuckle, rose of Sharon, mountain peach, Chinese juniper, etc.

Semi cold-hardy flowers, able to tolerate low temperatures of -5 degrees C

Most semi cold-hardy flowers originate from the southern edge of temperate zones or the northern edge of subtropical zones. They can generally tolerate low temperatures of around -5 degrees C, and most can overwinter in the open ground in the Yangtze River basin and North China.

Representative plants: plum blossom   osmanthus     nandina, Chinese rose, chrysanthemum, reineckea, osmanthus, pomegranate, osmanthus     nandina, etc.

Non cold-hardy flowers

These flowers originate from subtropical and tropical regions. They are not cold-hardy; they can overwinter in the open ground in South China and the southern part of Southwest China, but in other regions they all need to overwinter in greenhouses with human assistance, which is why they are called greenhouse flowers.

2. Classification of Greenhouse Flowers

Low-temperature greenhouse flowers

1. During overwintering, the temperature for these flowers must be kept above 0 degrees C. Most can overwinter in areas south of the Yangtze River;

2. Representative plants: camellia, azalea, New Year tangerine, Japanese fatsia, Aspidistra elatior, etc. A small number of species can overwinter in plastic tunnels or unheated greenhouses in regions south of the Yangtze River.

3. In areas without indoor heating in winter, indoor temperatures can only be maintained at around 0 to 5 degrees C. For such rooms, you can choose some flowers that tolerate slightly low temperatures, such as wire vine, geranium, rubber plant, palm grass, ivy, asparagus fern, giant taro, Schefflera octophylla, Norfolk Island pine, etc. These flowers and plants are slightly cold-tolerant and can grow well at such temperatures.

Medium-temperature greenhouse flowers

1. The overwintering temperature for these flowers is required to be above 5 degrees C. In southeastern East China and South China, most can overwinter in the open ground; in other regions they all need to be moved into greenhouses to overwinter, for example palm grass.

2. Orchids, Chinese hibiscus, jasmine, etc. need 6 to 10 degrees C to overwinter safely. Cyclamen, fuchsia, geranium, etc. cannot go below 10 degrees C.

3. Nighttime temperature should not be lower than 5 degrees C to 10 degrees C. Examples include poinsettia, cyclamen, white orchid, gloxinia, bougainvillea, Brazil wood, Malabar chestnut, philodendron, pothos, Monstera deliciosa, etc. If the temperature is too low in winter, these flowers will suffer cold damage or even freeze to death.

High-temperature greenhouse flowers

1. The overwintering temperature for these flowers is required to be above 10 degrees C, and many species require above 16 degrees C. For example: Chinese hibiscus    croton  .

2. For frangipani, poinsettia, glasswort, and succulent flowers such as cactus, night-blooming cereus, epiphyllum, and agave, the room temperature cannot be lower than 12 degrees C.

3. If the indoor temperature can be kept at around 8 degrees C, in addition to the flowers above, you can also grow foliage plants such as money tree, clivia, pothos, bromeliad, and Dracaena fragrans. If the room temperature can be maintained above 10 degrees C, the range of choices is even greater. Anthurium, cyclamen, begonia, bird's nest fern, bougainvillea, Rohdea japonica, etc. can all be chosen for growing.

That's it for the introduction! If you babies still have questions, just leave me a message!

Love you, mwah!
