How to prevent and control pests and diseases in Coelogyne orchids? Practical methods explained in one article
I. Coleosporium rust fungus
This is a common fungal pathogen that mainly appears on both the upper and lower surfaces of plant leaves, and sometimes also on the stems, forming small raised blisters. Generally, its spores are yellow, orange, rust-colored, or purplish-black powder that appears inside the blisters. After this pathogen appears, the entire plant will not die, but problems such as slow growth and weak, thin plants will occur, so it still needs to be taken seriously. When you encounter it, you should immediately cut off the diseased leaves and disinfect with a fungicide containing copper ions to prevent it from spreading.
II. Southern blight
This disease is also caused by a fungus, and many orchids can be infected. In severe cases, it can also destroy the plant's roots and stems, even killing the entire plant. It often occurs in June and July. When it first appears, you will find white mycelium covering the base of the plant's leaves. At this point, you must clear away its soil and treat it with a professional chemical powder or lime. To cure this type of disease at the root, pay attention to ventilation and light, and keep the flower pot well drained. If the disease is very severe, it may be necessary to burn the affected plants.
III. Anthracnose
This is a disease that can occur throughout the year, and it is more likely to occur in seasons with high temperatures and abundant rainfall. At first, brown areas will be found at the leaf tips, and later these areas will gradually spread toward the stems, with the entire area covered in black spots, ultimately causing the plant to become diseased and die. To prevent and control this disease, the sanitation around the flowers should be ensured as soon as possible. During the disease period, treat it about once a week with a 50% thiophanate-methyl 800-1500 times solution. Every fifteen days, you can also use 1% Bordeaux mixture for several treatments. By doing these things, you can help your beloved plant get through these seasons safely and steadily.
IV. Scale insects
This type of insect is also very common, and in seasons with high temperatures, excessive humidity, and poor air circulation, it is extremely likely to appear on a large scale. The hatching period is the easiest time to control it, and you should seize the opportunity to deal with it in a concentrated way. You can use chemicals such as omethoate or malathion to treat the plants in your home. It can also achieve the same effect. In minor cases, it can also be removed by brushing manually.
