What are the main values and uses of Nymphoides peltata?
1. Ornamental value
This is the most important aspect. We can observe that its floating leaves are round, with a V-shaped notch at the base, roughly 10 to 12 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. Its flowers have rounded stalks covered with white down. The outermost part of the flower consists of five sepals, and further inward are the less conspicuous petals, which have a hazy beauty. By contrast, the anthers further inward are much more prominent, forming a contrast with the petals. We can see that it is a plant valued both for its flowers and its leaves.
It is suitable for placement in ponds as a waterscape. It can be planted in combination with various plants such as Nymphoides indica and water lilies, thus creating a brilliant and eye-catching waterscape. Of course, it can also be planted in our courtyards, and in front of rockeries as well; this is a concrete expression of its garden application. If you want to grow it indoors, you can place it in a sunny spot.
2. Medicinal value
The use of this plant as a medicinal material was already recorded in documents long ago. Its properties are "sweet, astringent, neutral, non-toxic," and it has nourishing, strengthening, and stomachic effects, playing a good role in alleviating symptoms such as indigestion, physical weakness, and neurasthenia.
3. Environmental role
First, it has a purifying effect on water bodies, enhancing the self-purification capacity of the water and making the water clearer. If grown at home, it will have a beneficial effect on the air, absorbing some harmful gases.
4. Edible value
Under normal circumstances, we basically do not eat it. However, in years of famine, its seeds can be used when hulling rice.
