A Detailed Explanation of the Composition of Chamomile Essential Oil and Whether It Is a Compound Essential Oil
Main Components of Chamomile Essential Oil
An important constituent of chamomile essential oil is chamazulene, which is indigo blue in color and has a prominent anti-inflammatory effect. The excellent anti-inflammatory effect of German chamomile is in fact a potent effect brought about by the synergistic action of chamazulene, alpha-bisabolol, and sesquiterpene lactones.
Is Chamomile a Compound Essential Oil
In terms of efficacy, compound chamomile essential oil is somewhat better than pure essential oil.
The main differences between compound chamomile essential oil and pure essential oil are as follows:
1. Compound chamomile essential oil is made by blending two or more single essential oils with a carrier oil in a certain proportion to achieve a specific therapeutic effect; the essential oils can coordinate with each other, complementing one another and enhancing the therapeutic effect. Pure essential oil, on the other hand, is the essence extracted from the flowers, stems, roots, leaves or fruits of plants through steam distillation, cold pressing, maceration, solvent extraction or enfleurage.
2. Compound chamomile essential oil has a blended aroma of essential oils, and each compound essential oil has a fixed formula ratio and a targeted therapeutic effect, whereas pure essential oil is extracted in small amounts, requires more troublesome extraction methods, is expensive, cannot be applied directly to the skin, and needs to be diluted with a carrier oil.
3. Compound chamomile essential oil can be applied directly to the corresponding skin area for massage; it is a mixture of carrier oil and single essential oil, and its volatility lies between the two. Pure essential oil, however, cannot be applied directly to the skin and needs to be diluted with a carrier oil, and it is not an oil and has strong volatility.
4. Compound chamomile essential oil has a short shelf life and should be used as soon as possible after opening. Pure essential oil, however, has a shelf life of 2-5 years. Overall, in terms of efficacy, compound essential oil is still somewhat better.
