Urban families who grow flowers often worry about soil, but in fact you only need to collect some sawdust from a wood processing factory or furniture production facility to make a very ideal flower-growing medium yourself. Sawdust has good properties of looseness, aeration, water permeability and water retention, and it is also clean and hygienic, while its heat preservation is also strong, which is especially beneficial to root growth. First put the collected sawdust into a plastic bag or bucket, add some water appropriately, seal it and let it compost and ferment for two months, then take it out and expose it to the hot sun for 3~4 days, and it can be used after disinfection.

Sawdust can be used as a culture medium; when cultivating succulents, sawdust can be used. Adding a small amount of sawdust to the soil for growing plants can not only improve the soil structure, but also make the potting soil more loose and breathable. Sawdust can also be used as a cutting medium. Because sawdust has strong water retention, it is very suitable for cutting plants, such as cutting Chinese rose, gardenia, and so on. Plants not only root quickly, but also grow strong branches and leaves. When transplanting, the plant can also be planted together with the sawdust in the flowerpot, greatly reducing damage to the plant root system.

Remember that freshly produced sawdust should not be used immediately to grow flowers; it must be decomposed before use, otherwise it is easy to burn the roots. If you want to use sawdust as fertilizer, you need to treat the sawdust a little. Because only decomposed sawdust can be used as fertilizer. Put the sawdust in a bucket or bag, pour in a little water, then place it in a drafty spot, and after waiting one or two months it can be used.

For newly transplanted flowers and trees, especially mailed flower seedlings, because the mailing time is too long, the seedlings lose water severely and wilt to the point of dying. At this time, if they are planted in nutrient soil with a relatively high fertilizer content, the seedlings will be burned to death; if planted in a pot with soil that has no fertilizer content, after watering the soil easily hardens and does not let air through, and the new seedlings will also suffocate to death. If sawdust is used to plant new seedlings, because sawdust is loose, breathable, heat-preserving and moisture-retaining, after a period of time, new roots grow again from the old root parts of the dried-up fibrous roots of the new seedlings, bringing the seedlings back from the dead and restoring their vitality.

Using sawdust to cultivate orchids can replace orchid soil. When growing orchids in the north, the soil is often slightly alkaline, which makes the orchids grow poorly. Comparing orchids grown with leaf mold soil and with sawdust, the latter has larger pseudobulbs, plump and strong young buds, and roots that are semi-transparent and curd-like, without root rot, and it can bloom when there are only two leaves, breaking the traditional view that there must be at least four leaves before flowering. After sawdust has been in the pot for a period of time, it will rot and provide enough nutrients for the orchids. At the same time, sawdust is suitable for fungal growth, making the orchid fungi symbiotic with orchid roots grow well, and the orchid roots can remain in the best state for a long time.
