Spring is the growing season for succulents. Many plant lovers say their succulents haven't grown at all and always look sickly, yet they haven't died either. Some even say their succulents haven't grown for more than half a year. How can you get them growing again and getting fatter and fatter?

Sunlight during the growing season is very important for succulents, so let your plants get plenty of it. If the sun is scorching, just provide a little shade, for example by placing them next to a glass window. Plants are heliotropic, so while letting them enjoy the sunlight, remember to turn them every few days to prevent them from leaning to one side.

When a succulent stops growing for a short time, it may be in its dormant period or its acclimation period after repotting, but this is only short-term lack of growth. So we can first learn about the succulent's growing habits and see whether it is in a dormant period. If the succulent is in its acclimation period, its roots are not yet good, since it hasn't settled in and grown roots yet. If it has already been potted and settled in for several months and still shows no growth, then to get it growing again we need to repot it and check it over. It is spring now, the perfect time to repot succulents, and after pruning the roots, the succulent will settle in very quickly.

Generally speaking, the medium for succulents should be replaced once every 1~2 years, both to loosen the soil and to add fertilizer. The fertilizers we can usually choose are as follows: use a nutrient-rich medium, such as kanuma soil, peat, etc. Peat should not make up too large a proportion of the medium; mixing a small amount into the medium is enough. Sprinkle fertilizer on the surface of the medium (be sure to avoid the roots) and cover it with a thin layer of soil. Next is water-soluble fertilizer: dissolve the fertilizer in water (a very small amount), and watering also serves as a light feeding.

When potting succulents, use a slightly larger pot so the roots have enough space to grow. A small pot will restrict root growth. If you want your succulent to grow bigger, don't use a small pot; with a well-developed root system, making a succulent bigger is easy. It is now the growing season for succulents, and fertile soil helps them grow quickly. Some plant lovers increase the proportion of gritty soil in the mix, but gritty soil does not contain many nutrients, which is not suitable for small succulent seedlings.

Finally, let's mention why succulents go dormant. This is because they need to adapt to their original living environment, thus forming an annual dormant period and physiological habits. What we should point out here is that not all succulents have the same dormant period; some are dormant in winter, and some in summer.
