Five years ago, she came across succulents by chance and has been hooked ever since. From her first pot of succulents to the thousands she has now, she is immersed in the world of succulents, content and at ease. She is Zhu Qingmei, a 62-year-old succulent expert, and netizens have also given her an affectionate nickname: "Grandma Flower."
Speaking of her earliest experience growing succulents, Zhu Qingmei said that in order to find loose, breathable soil suitable for succulent growth, she collected dried coal briquettes everywhere and even went to the suburbs to haul soil. To mix soil suitable for succulents, she crushed the dried coal briquettes, soaked them in water, and mixed them into the soil to ensure it was loose and breathable. It took no small amount of effort.
When she bought succulents for the first time, Zhu Qingmei's daughter even laughed at her, saying, "You won't keep them alive, so don't bother." Zhu Qingmei refused to accept that: "I can't keep them alive? I don't believe it."
From "Huangli" (a succulent variety) at 5 yuan a pot to "Debbie" at 70 yuan, Zhu Qingmei has owned more and more succulent varieties, and so far there are about 300 kinds.
Growing succulents requires skill. From soil to temperature differences, and then to how much water to give, there are all kinds of finer points. When it is time to "behead" them, which season is suitable for "leaf propagation," and how to control water to produce beautiful, well-formed "old stems" - these are all questions that "succulent friends" often discuss among themselves. While growing succulents, Zhu Qingmei also set up her own succulent exchange group, where many friends who like succulents discuss how to grow and care for them.
Zhu Qingmei's current greenhouse is borrowed. There is a balcony on the top floor, and she used plastic film to build a sun shed. In winter, the temperature inside the shed can still reach over ten degrees Celsius, and in summer she adds a shade net, which provides ample conditions for succulent growth. The balcony of over ten square meters is covered with flower racks and filled with succulents of all kinds, and the greenhouse is equipped with a water pipe for convenient watering at any time.
But Zhu Qingmei is not satisfied with her current situation. In order to build a better rooftop garden, she specially bought a new house with a very large balcony space.
"This greenhouse is too small now. A lot of them can't fit. I'm keeping all these succulents to take to the new house. When the time comes, I'll use succulents of different colors to make a color band. It should be very beautiful. When I have nothing to do and look at my little garden, I feel very relaxed and really enjoy it," Zhu Qingmei said.
