We became obsessed with succulents because of how cute they are, jumped into the hobby without a second thought, thinking we too could grow them into beautiful specimens, but reality slaps you in the face especially hard: forget about color, sometimes they don't even look healthy, all limp and listless, and they threaten to up and die on you at the drop of a hat.

That's why many succulent growers say succulents are hard to keep, but not every kind of succulent is so demanding. Some succulents don't even need much care at all to grow into a big patch. Take the 4 kinds of succulents introduced below!

Those of you living in rural areas are in for a treat, because you've probably already seen them countless times on rooftops and on hillsides, those succulents that stretch out in a whole patch at a glance, and what a thrill it is!

Tile

Orostachys

Orostachys (Orostachys japonica, also known as Chinese dunce cap) is a wild succulent plant that is relatively common in China and has a fairly wide distribution range

If your home is an old rural tile-roofed house, you can find orostachys everywhere on the roof tiles. It has strong vitality and always grows in large patches, and when they all bloom at the same time, it is an extremely spectacular sight.

In those days when there was never enough to eat, orostachys counted as a fairly tasty food; people would pop it straight into their mouths without even washing it, and it tasted sour.

Not

Kalanchoe delagoensis

On the roofs of old houses, Kalanchoe delagoensis (mother of millions) often grows all over. The roofs are of course tiled roofs, some of them belonging to tiled houses where no one lives.

In less than a year, the roof can be covered with Kalanchoe delagoensis seedlings, and after that they keep spreading unchecked, with tiny seedlings growing all over the tiled roof.

These seedlings drop off as soon as the wind blows, so they can keep multiplying endlessly. It is an extremely drought-tolerant and poor-soil-tolerant plant that can grow as long as there is a crack to take root in.

Weeping

Stringy stonecrop

Stringy stonecrop (Sedum sarmentosum) is also a succulent plant. It is highly adaptable, drought-tolerant and cold-tolerant, and can often be found on rural rooftops, along wall corners or on hillsides, and it multiplies fairly quickly, appearing as a dense mass all at once as soon as it shows up!

Moreover, stringy stonecrop is a commonly used medicinal herb with an extremely wide folk tradition. Its whole plant can be used as medicine; stringy stonecrop has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying and promoting diuresis, and it can also be used to treat liver cancer.

Graptopetalum

Graptopetalum paraguayense

It is a succulent plant of the Crassulaceae family and the genus Graptopetalum, an evergreen trailing subshrub. With long sunlight hours and a large temperature difference, it turns pink-purple, and it blooms from April to May. It is native to Mexico  .

Graptopetalum paraguayense likes plenty of sunlight, dislikes waterlogging, tolerates poor soil, and is best grown in well-drained sandy loam. Watering once every 7-10 days is enough, and it is especially easy to care for.

It is the top-choice succulent for park cultivation and landscaping~ you can often see "other people's" Graptopetalum paraguayense covering an entire rooftop; though it is an ordinary, common variety, it is no less spectacular and stunning

!!

Graptopetalum paraguayense is mostly propagated by cuttings. In the growing season, stem cuttings can be taken along with pruning, or leaf cuttings can be used: place the leaves flat on moist plain sandy soil, and after two weeks you can see multiple adventitious buds and adventitious roots differentiating near the leaf veins at the base of the leaf. When doing leaf cuttings, the cutting bed should not be too wet, otherwise the leaves rot easily.

That's all for today's content. If you know of any other succulents with such vigorous vitality, you're welcome to leave a comment and tell the editor!
