Bougainvillea has a long blooming period and comes in many colors, making it very suitable for growing. But during cultivation, various situations of leaf drop and flower drop always occur. What causes them? And how should they be handled?

1. Human moving

The flowers of bougainvillea are relatively fragile. If it is frequently moved during the blooming period, or if there is strong wind and heavy rain, it will cause leaf drop and flower drop. It is best to fix the flowerpot in one place, preferably a place sheltered from wind and rain with ample sunlight.

2. Improper watering

Other flowers need watering when they bloom, but bougainvillea should be watered as little as possible during the blooming period. Only then will the blooming period be a bit longer. Watering will cause the flowers to drop quickly. If during the blooming period the branches and leaves are found to be wilting, spraying with a mist can be used to increase humidity in a small area.

3. Bougainvillea blooming period

Bougainvillea normally blooms in October to November, and flower bud differentiation occurs in August to September. In order for bougainvillea to bloom more, a little trick can be used, which is water control, to promote flower bud differentiation. Also, during the blooming period, more phosphorus fertilizer needs to be applied, so as to extend the blooming period of bougainvillea.

4. Improper fertilizing

When bougainvillea drops leaves and flowers due to excessive fertilizing, you also need to consider whether it has been fertilized too much recently. Excessive fertilizing or incorrect fertilizer will cause root burn in bougainvillea, plant wilting, yellowing leaves, and flower drop.

5. Insufficient light

Bougainvillea is a plant that likes sunlight, and it needs at least 9 hours of sunlight every day. In this way, the leaves will be dense and the flowers will bloom more. Especially during the blooming period, if this requirement is not met, it will drop flowers and drop leaves!

6. Solutions for bougainvillea leaf drop and flower drop

Supplement light source: Bougainvillea is not afraid of sun anyway, and the more sun it gets, the more beautiful it becomes. Flower lovers should not be stingy with sunlight. Put it under the light as much as possible, and bougainvillea will return to normal.

Prune dead leaves: When bougainvillea drops leaves, yellow leaves will appear on the plant. At this time, the yellow leaves should be cut off, leaving the branches. After sprouting, cut off the dead branches.

Control fertilizing: When fertilizing, choose thoroughly decomposed organic fertilizer and adhere to the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently, to avoid root burn and leaf drop.

Control watering: Both insufficient watering and excessive watering will cause leaf drop, so watering should be done according to the season. In summer, water once each morning and evening; in winter, water once every 3~5 days. Both can avoid the phenomenon of leaf drop.
