Napier grass, also known as purple napiergrass, is a perennial, clumping, large herbaceous plant of the grass family, tribe Paniceae, and is an excellent forage. So how much does its seed cost per jin? How is it planted? How many cattle can one mu feed? According to Mr. Shen from a Shuyang nursery company, the price of napier grass seed is roughly 20-30 yuan per jin.

How is napier grass planted?

1. Use about 500 jin of grass stems per mu. When planting on relatively flat fields or plots, dig planting furrows at different row spacings, with a furrow depth of about 14 cm, and apply an appropriate amount of farmyard manure or calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer at the bottom of the furrow as base fertilizer.

2. It is advisable to apply sufficient organic fertilizer as base fertilizer at 1500-2500 kg/mu, 25 kg/mu of calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer, and 5-10 kg/mu of compound fertilizer; where organic fertilizer is sufficient, the amount of chemical fertilizer can be appropriately reduced.

3. Generally, when the average temperature reaches 13-14 degrees C, seed stems can be used for planting, with 2 rows per bed, and a plant spacing of 50-60 cm. The seed stems can be laid flat or inserted diagonally with the buds facing up, with each seed stem retaining at least two nodes (bud eyes), and covered with 6-10 cm of soil.

4. Generally, seedlings emerge 7-10 days after planting, and tillering begins after 15-20 days. Fertile land produces more tillers, while poor land produces fewer; the rainy season produces more tillers, while the dry season produces fewer. Therefore, generally as long as water and fertilizer are sufficient, high yields can be obtained. Napier grass has an extremely strong tillering ability and grows quickly. When propagated by seed stems, forage purposes require about 1500 bud nodes per mu, and after one year of planting, all the harvested bud nodes can be used to expand planting to 500 mu.

5. After each subsequent harvest of napier grass, apply 1500-2500 kg/mu of farmyard manure. In high-temperature areas of southern China, 5-6 harvests can be obtained, with an annual yield per mu reaching more than 40000 jin.

How many cattle can one mu of napier grass feed?

One mu of forage grass can raise 5 cattle, and 30 mu of land can raise 150 cattle.

Napier grass is soft and juicy, has very good palatability, and a high utilization rate. Cattle, horses, sheep, rabbits, ducks, geese and others like to eat it, and in its young and tender stage it is also a good feed for raising pigs and fish. In addition to providing green feed for livestock and poultry in all four seasons, it can also be made into hay or silage. Napier grass has relatively high nutritional value, with both protein content and digestibility being relatively high.

In addition, napier grass can also replace coal and oil for power generation. The energy produced by the fuel from planting 1 hectare of napier grass can replace 36 barrels of oil, and at least 60 tons of napier grass can be harvested per hectare. The root system of napier grass is very well developed, and when planted beside ponds and on embankments, it can play a role in protecting embankments and conserving soil. Napier grass can also be cut as a mulching material for perennial crops. In short, napier grass has high yield, excellent quality, extremely good palatability, a long service life, and relatively wide uses. It has very high economic value and is one of the good forage plants in tropical and subtropical regions.
