Potted plants placed in living rooms, studies and bedrooms have a strong contemporary feel. Next, the editor will introduce the umbrella tree, as well as common problems in keeping umbrella trees at home.

Growth habits of the umbrella tree

The umbrella tree likes a warm, humid, semi-sunny environment, and its optimum growth temperature is 16-27°C. From March to September it is 21-27°C, and from September to the following March it is 16-21°C. It can still grow normally under high temperatures above 30°C. In winter the temperature should not be lower than 5°C. If the temperature is below 0°C, the plant will be damaged by cold and drop its leaves, but if the stem is intact, it will sprout new leaves again in the following spring.

The umbrella tree likes moisture and fears dryness. When the air humidity is high and the soil moisture is sufficient, the stems and leaves grow luxuriantly. But too much water, causing waterlogging, will cause root rot.

The umbrella tree has a wide range of adaptability to light and can grow in full sun, half sun or semi-shade environments. However, when the light is strong, the leaf color is lighter, and when the light is weak, the leaf color is darker green. Under bright light, the colors of variegated varieties are more vivid.

The soil is best as fertile, loose and well-drained sandy loam. For household potting soil, use a mixture of peat soil, leaf mold and coarse sand.
