Growth habits of Qi Li Xiang
Qi Li Xiang likes warmth; the most suitable growing temperature is 20 to 32°C. It is not cold-tolerant. In winter, when the minimum temperature drops to around 5°C, move it indoors to overwinter at a low temperature (5 to 10°C). Moving it in too early is not good for hardening its cold tolerance. If the room temperature is too low, it easily drops leaves, affecting growth the following year; below 0°C it may freeze to death. If the room temperature is too high, the plant cannot enter dormancy well and may even sprout indoors; when it is taken outside and hit by cold wind, the sprouts recede, and when new sprouts emerge again, growth that year is affected.
Qi Li Xiang is a sun-loving tree species and should be placed in a spot with ample sunlight and air circulation (at least five or six hours of direct light per day) to have lush leaves, abundant flowers, and fragrance. When it blooms, it can be moved to a windowsill, filling the room with fragrance. After the flowers fade, it still needs to be placed in a spot with ample sunlight; growth in half shade is less robust than in a sunny spot, and the flower fragrance is also weaker. If it is too shaded, the branches become thin and soft, the leaf color becomes pale, and there are few or no flowers. In winter, when brought indoors, it should also be placed in a spot with ample sunlight.
