What kind of plant is the hyacinth? Get to know this bulb plant

Flowers & Gardening By Emily Carter 0 views
The hyacinth is native to the Mediterranean coast, the Asia Minor region and the Netherlands, and is now widely cultivated all over the world. There is a great wealth of hyacinth varieties, with as many as two thousand or more recorded, and the main authentic varieties fall into two groups: the "Dutch type" and the "Roman type".

Alternative names

Foreign narcissus, Western narcissus, five-color narcissus, shiyang brocade

Morphological characteristics

Because the hyacinth is a bulb plant, it grows a (flat) spherical bulb, and also has a purplish-blue or white membranous outer skin, usually similar to the color of the flower.

The leaves of the hyacinth are green, glossy, fleshy leaves, rather thick, and shaped like a strap-like lanceolate leaf.

When the hyacinth blooms, about 10-20 small flowers are densely borne on the upper part of the stem, generally growing horizontally, with very few drooping; like the corolla, the whole has a funnel shape, and the flower colors are very rich, with many strains including blue, pink, purple, yellow and white.

Growth habits

The hyacinth needs sufficient light to grow, is fairly cold-resistant itself, and a cool, moist growing environment suits it better.

The hyacinth is best planted in fertile sandy soil with good drainage, and besides being planted in the ground, it can also be grown in water.

The hyacinth sprouts in spring, takes root in autumn, and its flowering period is usually in March.

Value and uses

Ornamental value: The hyacinth is a precious bulb flower; its plants grow neat and low, bloom in early spring, and have dignified flower spikes and rich flower colors, with a very graceful posture. It can be used nicely to decorate flower beds, flower borders and flower troughs, and can also be made into cut flowers or potted plants, or grown in water for viewing.

Other value: The hyacinth also has a dust-filtering effect; its floral scent helps stabilize mood and relieve mental fatigue; in addition, aromatic oil can be extracted from the flowers.

Note: The bulb of the hyacinth is toxic, and eating it by mistake can cause symptoms such as dizziness, stomach cramps and diarrhea, so children or pets must be kept from eating it by mistake.

Flower language

Victory, competition, joy, happiness, complacency, love, admiration, deep affection, eternal remembrance.

It further symbolizes that as long as you light the fire of life, you can share a rich life. Forget the sorrows of the past and begin a brand-new love.
