In ancient times there was the cuckoo bird, which cried day and night until it coughed blood, dyeing the flowers all over the mountains red, and thus the azalea got its good name. Today, the azalea is widely cultivated and is a good material for bonsai; its deep green leaves also make it suitable for planting in courtyards as a low-wall barrier.

Other names for the azalea

Shan Zhizhu, Shan Shiliu, Ying Shan Hong, Zhao Shan Hong, Tang Azalea.

Growth habits of the azalea

The azalea originally grew on mountain slopes or under pine forests at an altitude of 500-1200 m. It likes acidic soil and does not like calcareous soil, so the azalea is often used as an indicator of acidic soil.

The azalea likes moist, cool, ventilated, semi-shaded places, and is neither heat-tolerant nor cold-tolerant. The most suitable temperature for growth is 12-25°C. In summer the temperature must not exceed 35°C, otherwise the plant will enter a semi-dormant state. Therefore, in summer it should be protected from the sun and shaded, and in winter it should be kept warm and protected from the cold.

The azalea needs sunlight to grow, but it should avoid scorching sun exposure; it is suitable for growing in places with weak light and sufficient scattered light.

The flower language of the azalea

The joy of love, great good fortune, boldness, purity, loyalty, homesickness.

Prosperity and auspiciousness, resilience and optimism, a thriving career.

For white azaleas, people regard them as fresh and refined, and when given between men and women they appear even more elegant. For azaleas with both red and white, the meaning is even deeper, expressing: the hope to blend seamlessly with you and create a beautiful tomorrow together.
