The leaves and roots of the spider lily have excellent medicinal efficacy, and it is mostly distributed along the coastal areas or sandy lands of South China. Generally, we refer to the Asian spider lily, whose name can mislead people into thinking it is some kind of orchid plant, but this is not the case; the spider lily belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family.

Alternative names of the spider lily

Its alternative names include Wenzhu lily, Wenlan tree, Luoqun belt, water banana, sea banana, Yu banana, corn lily, kelp seven, and so on.

Morphological characteristics of the spider lily

Asian spider lily: A robust herbaceous perennial. It has a long columnar bulb. The whole plant has roughly fewer than 30 leaves, arranged in multiple rows and lanceolate in shape, with the longest reaching about 1 m, and its width is about 7-12 cm, possibly even wider, tapering from low to high and with a pointed tip, dark green at the margins. Its flower stem is upright, almost equal in length to the leaves, bearing about 10-24 flowers, with an umbellate inflorescence; the pedicels are about 0.5-2.5 cm long. The fruit is subglobose, about 4 cm in diameter, with one seed. Its flowering period is in summer.

Lovely spider lily: It differs from the Asian spider lily in its spherical bulb, and its leaves are not wavy. The plant height is about below 60 cm, and it is distributed approximately in tropical Asia; its flowers are slightly more regular than those of the Asian spider lily, and the flowers mostly open together, usually drooping before blooming.

Red-flowered spider lily: It does not differ much in plant type from the Asian spider lily, and the flower shape is just as irregular as that of the spider lily, with a touch of the vivid red of the Ceylon striped spider lily on the flowers.

Growth habits of the spider lily

The spider lily likes warm, humid environments with ample light and fertile soil; it is not cold-tolerant and tolerates saline-alkali soil, but during the seedling stage it must not be exposed to direct sunlight. The suitable growth temperature is 15-20°C; in winter, during the bulb's dormancy period, the storage temperature should be controlled at around 8°C.
For pot cultivation, a sandy culture soil with high humus content, fertile woodland soil, and strong permeability is suitable.
