“1.8 meters tall” - this seemingly exaggerated description is no myth in the world of lilies. The lily family is vast, and the traditional lilies we commonly see are mostly short varieties just a few dozen centimeters tall. For example, the Oriental lilies often sold in flower shops generally stand only 40-60 cm tall; the flowers are fragrant, but the plants are compact. Beyond these, there are actually quite a few members with exceptionally tall stature. With their upright bearing, they stand out remarkably among all kinds of flowers and catch the eye at a glance.

Let's start with the tiger lily, also a famous “tall one” among lilies, roughly the height of an adult, far taller than traditional lilies. Its stems are covered with small black spots, making it easy to identify, whereas traditional lily stems are mostly smooth and green, with few spots. Its flowers are orange-red, and the petals do not spread out like those of other lilies but curl backward upward, looking like clusters of burning flames, full of vitality - completely different from the spreading petal form of traditional lilies. The petals are also dotted with scattered black spots, adding a uniquely charming flavor, while traditional lily petals rarely have such obvious spots.

The tiger lily's “character” is especially tough, with super-strong resistance to harsh environments. Whether it is a hot summer or a cold winter, it can adapt, and it is not picky about soil fertility or pH. Even on relatively poor land, it can grow tenaciously - far stronger than the “delicate” nature of traditional lilies. If traditional lilies encounter poor soil or sudden temperature changes, they easily develop yellow leaves and wither. When the flowering season arrives, swaths of tiger lilies sway in the wind, forming vast seas of flowers - truly spectacular. That is why they are often used to adorn yards and parks, adding a touch of wild beauty to natural landscapes. Traditional lilies, by contrast, are mostly placed indoors as cut flowers or grown in small areas on balconies, and it is hard for them to form such a spectacular large-scale scene.

Next, look at the Emei lily, which has a more vivid name: “giant lily” - just from the name you can tell it is not short. This lily mainly grows near Mount Emei, and it is definitely a representative “tall one” in the genus Lilium. The plants can easily grow to about 2 m, two to three times taller than the traditional lilies we commonly see. For example, in Gongqing Forest Park, many of the Emei lilies carefully tended by staff have already exceeded 2 m, and some are even nearly 3 m. Standing beside them, you can clearly feel their tall, upright presence - a visual impact that short traditional lilies simply cannot provide.

When the flowering season arrives, the top of each Emei lily grows several buds, and when they open, the flower quantity is especially large, surrounded by a rich floral fragrance. Whether you look at it or smell it, it gives a very intense impression and is especially captivating, whereas traditional lilies have fewer flowers per plant and a relatively lighter fragrance. The Emei lily is suited to growing in the cool, humid climate of mountainous areas and likes fertile, well-drained soil. As long as the environment is suitable, it can fully display its tall and elegant appearance. This differs from the traits that make traditional lilies suitable for home growing - it is better suited to open outdoor locations.

Next to introduce is the OT lily, a variety bred by crossing Oriental lilies and trumpet lilies. You could say it inherits the strengths of both parents, especially standing out in plant vigor and height. Generally speaking, grown OT lilies can grow at least 1.2 m tall, and some varieties perform so well they can even reach 2.5 m. Planted in a yard, they easily become the focus of everyone's attention, whereas traditional lilies, no matter how well grown, rarely exceed 1 m. For example, there is a variety called “Miss Fairy” whose plants grow straight and whose flowers are especially large, with soft pink petals and slightly ruffled edges, looking especially elegant and charming. There is also the variety “Amazing Girl”, whose flower color is a brilliant golden yellow, with petals also covered in small red spots - the color is especially vivid and can be seen from far away. Although these flower colors and forms are similar to some traditional lilies, OT lily flowers are larger, with a diameter reaching 15-20 cm, considerably bigger than the roughly 10 cm flower diameter of traditional lilies.

Even more remarkable is that OT lilies are not only tall but also highly adaptable, able to withstand both cold and heat, and not so strict about soil requirements. Whether planted in a yard or in a large flower bed, they grow very lushly, and when they bloom, the colors are especially rich, adorning the garden landscape beautifully. This gives them an advantage over traditional lilies, which, when planted outdoors on a large scale, are more susceptible to weather and do not grow as consistently.

These tall lilies, with their upright bearing and brilliant flowers, break the fixed impression many of us have that lilies are all small and delicate. Compared with the traditional lilies we encounter daily, they have unique advantages in height, flower quantity and adaptability to growing environments. Whether it is the understated elegance of the large lily, the pure white of the Emei lily, or the colorful variety of OT lilies, they all bring a different kind of splendor to the world of flowers. They have now also become indispensable beautiful scenery in gardens and green spaces, and every time you see them, they are especially pleasing to the eye.
