What to do when a Phalaenopsis orchid has stem rot and only the roots are left, can it still be saved?

Gardeners who grow Phalaenopsis orchids have probably all experienced this kind of crushing moment: an orchid that was perfectly fine suddenly has roots that are rotten, black and slimy, falling off at the slightest touch, and when you lean in there is a sour, foul smell, the leaves droop limply downward, and the stem even has brown rotten spots... Anyone who has grown Phalaenopsis orchids has probably hit this kind of meltdown: an orchid that was perfectly fine suddenly has roots that rot black and slimy, dropping off at the slightest touch, with a sour, foul smell when you lean in close, leaves that go limp and flop downward, and even brown spots of rot on the stem... At this point many people think "it's hopeless" and toss it straight into the trash. But in fact, as long as you go about it the right way, even if rot leaves only a bit of healthy root, a Phalaenopsis can still be saved! Today I'll share effective rescue methods and care tips with you.

Root rot is not a terminal illness!

“
Leaves soft, collapsed and yellowing”“Roots black and sticky”“Stem crumbling at the slightest touch”…Don't panic if you run into these stem rot symptoms! As long as there is still healthy tissue at the neck, you can save it by following the steps~ Mine went from“a buzz cut”to growing new leaves in only1month!

Step1: Be ruthless and cut away the rotten roots

Rotten roots will keep infecting the healthy parts, so you must trim thoroughly:

1.
Take it out of the pot and remove the potting medium; blackish-brown, soft, slimy roots are all rotten, while healthy roots are white/light green and firm

2. Use sterilized scissors to cut away all the rotten roots and yellow leaves, and shave the blackened parts of the stem until fresh tissue shows

3. Rinse the slime off the roots under running clean water, and gently brush away leftover rotten debris with a small soft brush (don't touch new little root buds!)

4. Let it dry in a ventilated spot for2hours so the wounds dry out

Step2: Disinfect by soaking

After trimming you must disinfect, otherwise root rot easily comes back:

Method①: Soak in carbendazim

1
scoop of carbendazim+ 500mlwater, soak the roots for30minutes (don't get the leaves wet), then take it out and blot the water dry

Method②: Natural garlic water

500ml
water+ 3scoops of rice+half a head of garlic crushed and strained, soak the roots for half an hour; it disinfects naturally and also encourages root growth

After soaking you must let it dry; a damp state easily causes stem rot!

Step3: Water culture to encourage rooting

After root rot, don't pot it up directly; water culture is safest:

ContainerDIY:

Cut a500mlplastic bottle (leave10cmof height), poke holes in the bottle for airflow, and pour in2cmof cooled boiled water

Water culture steps:

1.
Rest the plant on the mouth of the bottle with1/3of the roots touching the water, without drowning the neck (you can secure it with a toothpick)

2. Put it in a spot with bright, indirect light and good airflow, and mist the roots each morning to keep them humid (don't let water pool in the leaf center)

3. Change the water every 3days, and in10-15days you'll see little white root buds emerging~

Step4: Move to soil to restore vigor

Once the new roots reach3cm, move it into a pot; don't get the details wrong:

1.
Use a root-control pot+pure sphagnum moss; don't let the moss bury the neck (leave1cmexposed to prevent smothering and rot) 2. Water along the edge of the pot

Spray once a month with1dose of metalaxyl

hymexazol (1:1500) to prevent disease, and keep it in a spot with airflow and bright, indirect light

Special case: what if all the roots have rotted?

If the roots have all rotted but there are healthy leaves at the top, you can cut off the rotten parts and keep the leaves in water culture; there is a30%chance of it pushing out a new bud~ Check on it often day to day, and deal with yellowing leaves and black rot immediately!
