I had always dreamed of having a little tropical forest at home, until I came across thedwarf banana and realised--you do not have to go to the seaside, a balcony can make it happen"tropical rainforest freedom"! The broad green leaves are like little fans, and when the sunlight falls on them the light and shadow sway; even your breath carries a fresh scent of greenery. Even if it never fruits, I am perfectly happy to be its"looks fan"~

After I shared the growing guide for the dwarf banana last time, the comments section was flooded with questions from fellow plant lovers!"Can it be grown in a pot without drainage holes?""Will it die if it is left in blazing sun in the yard in summer?"What should I do if there is not enough light?"As someone who has been through it, today I will answer them all in one go, so grab a notebook and take notes~

Q1Can I grow a dwarf banana in a pot without drainage holes??

Answer: Absolutely not!!I saw a fellow grower say"I am worried about root rot when growing it in a pot with no holes", and this really needs an urgent fix! The dwarf banana's root system hates being waterlogged; a pot without drainage holes will collect water, and within a week the roots will turn black and rot and the leaves will yellow and droop.

Emergency fix: if you are already using a pot with no holes, quickly drill2-3small holes in the bottom of the pot (with a hand drill or by tapping a nail, and be careful not to hurt your hands), or lay5cmof thick clay pebbles/crushed stone at the bottom of the pot as a"drainage layer", then pour off any standing water in the saucer right after watering, and never let the roots sit in water!

For beginners choosing pots, go for"the breathable kind with holes"; terracotta pots and gallon pots are both perfect choices, breathable and free-draining, truly a root-growing miracle~

Q2Will it die if it is left in blazing sun in the yard in summer?

Answer: Sun away without worry! The more sun, the livelier it gets~The dwarf banana is originally a tropical plant and naturally loves sunlight! In summer I keep my dwarf banana on a south-facing terrace, and even with the big sun at35°C at noon, the leaves actually turn greener and glossier, and even new leaves emerge faster than usual~

But be careful! A young seedling you just bought home should not suddenly be put in blazing sun (it will get"sunburnt"leaves); first put it in bright indirect light to adapt for2-3days, then gradually move it into the sun. If the leaves look a little wilted from the sun, mist the leaves in the evening to cool them down, and the next day they will be fully revived~On the contrary, long-term lack of light will make the leaves thinner and yellow, and the tropical feel will disappear completely!

Q3What should I do if there is not enough light? Can it be grown on a balcony with poor light?

Answer: Not enough light really will make its"looks plummet"! The dwarf banana needs at least6hours of sunlight a day; if the balcony faces north and the light is insufficient, the leaves will grow thinner and thinner, the colour will fade, and the leaf stalks may even become long and thin and prone to falling over.

Little rescue tips: put it in the brightest spot on the balcony, such as a plant stand near the window, so it can catch indirect light; use a grow light as a supplement (choose a full-spectrum plant light, run it for4-6hours a day, at a distance of about50cm); if the light really is poor, do not force it, and switch to shade-tolerant plants such as Monstera deliciosa or Philodendron bipinnatifidum instead~

A few more must-reads for beginners"life-saving details"!

1. Do not water by feel: feel the potting mix2cm below the surface and water again once it is dry; water in the morning in summer and at noon in winter, then after watering give the pot a little shake so the water soaks through evenly, and never give"half water"~

2. Do not be lazy when the leaves get dirty: wipe the leaves once a week with a damp cloth, and do not scrub hard with a damp cloth! Gently wipe away the dust; only when the leaves are clean can they photosynthesise better, and it also helps prevent pests and diseases~

3. Keep it warm in winter: below15°C, move it indoors at once, away from air-conditioner vents and radiators, otherwise the leaves will be dried out and yellowed by the draught, and covering it with a plastic bag to keep in moisture is more reliable~

Actually, growing a dwarf banana really is not that hard; as long as you grasp"plenty of light, no waterlogging, and regular fertilising"these key points, even beginners can grow that lush tropical feel~
