Pink Beauty

Daily Phalaenopsis Care Guide

Light: Phalaenopsis orchids dislike harsh sun but love light, so a spot on the desk near a window is ideal, receiving 3-4 hours of indirect light a day (such as sunlight filtered through a sheer curtain), and avoiding direct sun (which scorches the petals). Too little light leads to fewer blooms, while the right amount of light makes the flowers fuller and the colors brighter.

Watering: Phalaenopsis is an epiphytic plant, and its roots hate being smothered or waterlogged! Before watering, check the potting medium (sphagnum moss /bark); water only when it feels dry and looks pale, pouring slowly and thoroughly around the rim of the pot until water runs out the bottom, and never let water accumulate! In summer, water once every 5-7 days, and in winter once every 10-15 days; in an air-conditioned room you can place a small bowl of water beside the pot to raise humidity (do not let the pot bottom sit in water).

Temperature: The most suitable temperature for growth is 15-25℃, and in winter do not let it drop below 10℃ (it will suffer cold damage), and when summer temperatures exceed 30℃ move it to a cool, airy spot away from air-conditioner vents and radiators; at a suitable temperature the flowering period can be extended to 2-3 months.

Fertilizing: No fertilizing is needed during the flowering period; after the flowers fade, cut off the flower spike (leaving 3-4 nodes), and apply a diluted Phalaenopsis-specific fertilizer once a month (mixed with water according to the instructions), which helps it regain strength and makes it more likely to bloom again the following year.

Ventilation: A long-term stuffy, closed environment easily causes root rot and mold, so open the windows for half an hour every day, or place it near a fan for a gentle breeze (do not blow directly on the flowers), keeping the air circulating so the leaves and roots stay healthier.
