When growing tomatoes on a balcony, pest problems are fairly common, and knowing the types of pests and how to control them can effectively reduce losses.

I. Common Pests and Their Damage

Aphids: They cluster on tender leaves and growing points, causing leaves to curl and growth to stall, and in severe cases the whole plant wilts.

Whiteflies: They suck the sap from leaves, causing leaves to wither and fruit quality to decline, and their secretions tend to worsen sooty mold.

Cotton bollworm / beet armyworm: They feed on flowers and fruits, causing flowers to drop and fruits to rot, which affects yield.

Broad mite (tea yellow mite): It is tiny in size and causes leaves to become smaller and fruits to crack, so targeted control is needed.

II. Control Measures

1. Manual control

For larvae such as the cotton bollworm, check the undersides of leaves and the crevices of fruits regularly and remove them promptly; a small number of aphids and whiteflies can be dealt with by wiping the leaves or washing them with water, reducing the pest population base.

2. Chemical control

Aphids: choose 22% thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsule suspension plus 70% acetamiprid water-dispersible granules and spray with water.

Whiteflies: use a mixed spray of 10% nitenpyram + 20% dinotefuran + 10% pyriproxyfen to target both adults and eggs.

Broad mite (tea yellow mite): use a dedicated acaricide (such as abamectin) and spray according to the instructions.

3. Environmental management

Keep the balcony well ventilated and well lit, and avoid overwatering, which causes excessively high humidity; regularly clean up diseased leaves and fruits to reduce environments where pests can breed.

In short, as long as you monitor pests well and carry out targeted control, you can help balcony tomatoes grow healthily.
