Phalaenopsis orchids are elegant and beautiful, yet they often give growers a headache because their roots become moldy. Understanding the causes and mastering scientific treatment methods is the key to caring for Phalaenopsis.

I. Causes of Moldy Roots

1.
Overly wet potting medium: Phalaenopsis is an epiphytic plant, and its roots need air and a wet-dry cycle. If the potting medium holds water too strongly or you water too frequently, the roots stay in a damp environment for a long time, leading to a lack of oxygen, the growth of anaerobic bacteria, and mold.

2.Poor ventilation: stagnant air raises humidity, which favors mold growth. If Phalaenopsis is kept in a closed corner or placed too densely for a long time, air exchange becomes difficult and the roots easily become moldy.

3.Root injury: pulling during repotting, accidental damage from tools and other causes can break the roots, destroying their protective barrier and giving mold an opportunity to invade.

4.Pathogen infection: Fusarium, Pythium and other pathogens exist in the environment. When the plant's resistance is weak, these pathogens invade the roots and cause mold, and they may also spread to other plants.

II. Solutions for Moldy Roots

1.
Drain promptly: When you notice moldy roots, carefully take out the plant and use paper towels to blot the moisture from the roots and potting medium, slowing mold growth.

2.Clean the roots: Use sterilized scissors to cut off the moldy and rotting parts until healthy tissue is exposed.

3.Disinfection: Soak the roots in a carbendazim solution for 10minutes, then take them out and let them dry in a cool, ventilated place to prevent reinfection.

4.Replace the potting medium: Discard the old medium and use a fresh mix of moist bark and sphagnum moss. Put expanded clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage, then repot the plant.

5.Improve ventilation: Place the Phalaenopsis in a well-ventilated spot, or use a fan to help lower humidity, which helps the plant recover.

III. Care Precautions

After treatment, control water strictly. Water only when the surface of the potting medium is dry and the inside is slightly moist, and water thoroughly when you do. Provide bright, indirect light and keep the temperature at 15 - 30°C. Observe regularly, and you can spray a low-concentration carbendazim solution as a preventive measure to help the Phalaenopsis grow healthily and bloom beautifully.
