Is Buying Phalaenopsis Online Reliable? This Is How to Care for Newly Arrived Seedlings
In recent years, Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) has become a household name - who hasn't kept a pot or two? Even livestream platforms have rushed to grab a share of the market, and the prices are quite tempting: a 1.7-inch Phalaenopsis seedling costs just over 5 yuan, which has made many flower lovers eager to place orders. However, from the perspective of home care, this practice is not recommended.

Why is it not recommended? There are several reasons. First, a 1.7-inch Phalaenopsis seedling is completely immature. If an ordinary beginner buys one, it is really hard to manage. Although this miniature plant looks quite cute, getting it to bloom would take at least two to three years with no guarantee.
Second, you should know that an ordinary home simply cannot compare with a professional orchid nursery. They grow them in specially controlled greenhouses with constant temperature and humidity, and experienced growers watch over them every day. Only in such an environment can seedlings shoot up to 3.5 inches in a year, with strong roots and plump leaves.

Finally, in most ordinary homes, only the balcony may get some acceptable sunlight, or only an air-conditioned room can create acceptable temperature and humidity. If the seedlings are not given a properly managed environment, they may wilt within a few days, or even worse, suffer root rot and die outright.

Here is a real case: the editor once, blinded by a moment of folly, bought online a seedling of 'Golden Zebra' for 99 yuan plus shipping. When it arrived, I was captivated by its golden striped pattern, but within less than 2 days of keeping it, red spider mites appeared all over its leaves. None of the other Phalaenopsis at home were affected - only this one 'fell ill,' probably because the variety is naturally delicate. After a hard struggle to save it, a year has passed and it still has only four leaves, with no sign of blooming at all, which nearly made me lose all patience.

So these painful lessons prove one point: if you simply want to enjoy the flowers, or just want the pleasure of growing plants, then by no means should you buy Phalaenopsis online. If you are going to buy, buy a mature plant or one with flower buds. Although it costs a bit more, you won't have to endure years of waiting - it will bloom beautifully within a few days of arriving home, and daily care is much less troublesome. Especially for beginners or friends who are usually busy, choosing a large plant is the surest way to avoid mistakes.
