For friends who work nine to five, they arguably spend more time in the office than at home, so they want to make the office lively too! At times like this, many people choose the high-appeal "Phalaenopsis", but is this delicate flower suitable for growing in the office?

In fact, there is no such thing as suitable or unsuitable when it comes to caring for plants; as long as the growing environment matches, there is absolutely no problem keeping a Phalaenopsis. First, the issue of light: orchids are not like sunflowers and other "sun-worshippers" that must get their full dose of sun. Relatively speaking, their light requirements are a bit laid-back, because they can tolerate shade, and this makes them very suited to an office with no strong sun. As for placement, as long as there is a bit of bright, scattered light by the window it will do; it is recommended to place it half a meter away from the window, where it gets no direct sunlight, and it can then photosynthesise quite comfortably.

Next, let's talk about humidity. Offices generally run the air conditioning all year round, with little natural breeze, so the air is fairly dry. What to do then? In fact, you just need to put a mini humidifier next to the plant, and it can "top up" with moisture at any time. If you feel a humidifier costs too much and is not worth buying, you can also find a tray, fill it with some water, toss in a few small stones, and set the flower pot on the stones, relying on water evaporation to raise the humidity. Then, when you have a spare moment, use a spray bottle to give the leaves a "shower", and the dryness problem is easily solved.

Another point: office space is fairly cramped, and at times like this a small-statured Phalaenopsis is suitable. That is because the space it needs is just a palm-sized desktop to fit it in. In idle moments, when the workload is heavy, glancing a few times at petals like little butterflies counts as a way to instantly cure fatigue.

Finally, the key to keeping it alive is not having to think about watering it every day; it is recommended to water it thoroughly once a week. Fertilising is not troublesome either: buy a bottle of orchid-specific fertiliser, dilute it according to the instructions, and give it a "nutritional meal" once every one or two months. In addition, pay more attention to whether the leaves are turning yellow or the roots are turning black, and deal with any problems promptly, and it is a thoroughly "lazy-person-friendly" contender.
