Reasons for Sticky Sap on Phalaenopsis Spikes and How to Solve It
For people who love flowers and plants, Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) is a flower that combines beauty with symbolism. After blooming, they have a unique butterfly-like quality, and because there are many varieties, their colors are also very vibrant.

However, although it is the first choice for home decoration, during the care process many flower lovers encounter a confusing problem. Some followers left messages asking: why does the Phalaenopsis flower spike produce oil? Is this normal? They are very worried it will not bloom! In fact, a layer of oily substance appearing on the flower spike is not novel or unique; it is quite common. The oil on the flower spike is its own secretion. This secretion feels sticky to the touch and has a faint floral scent; it mainly attracts insects for pollination. The formation of this oily feeling is mainly caused by too-high environmental humidity, or poor ventilation, or unstable factors such as temperature and light. It can also be considered an oily substance produced when the flower starts to resist external adverse factors.

If you find that the Phalaenopsis flower spike is producing oil, what should you do? First, place it in a space with a temperature of 25 to 30°C as much as possible, and keep humidity at 60% to 80%. The light position does not need to be intense; place it in a spot with scattered light. In addition, pay attention to ventilation and do not let it become stuffy.

In terms of watering and fertilizing, do not water too frequently. The main rule is to water when you touch the soil surface and find it dry. After each thorough watering, do not forget to pour out the accumulated water in the saucer. Generally speaking, in spring and summer water about once every 4 days, and in autumn and winter about once every 8 days. For fertilizing, during the peak growing season apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once every 15 days. Do not fertilize during the flowering period, otherwise root rot is easy to occur.

Finally, in daily care, I do not just water and fertilize and then ignore it. I also need to regularly observe the condition of the Phalaenopsis. If you see oil on the flower spike, first recall recent changes in the environment, then make targeted adjustments. For example, appropriately reduce watering, adjust the fertilizing strategy, or improve ventilation conditions. Pay special attention: Phalaenopsis flower spikes are relatively fragile, so during daily care never casually touch them, to avoid damaging them.
