Temperatures have been fluctuating sharply lately, and the day-night temperature difference has widened noticeably. This is the golden season to force flower spikes on Phalaenopsis orchids! Mastering the right method for forcing spikes will let your Phalaenopsis send up upright flower spikes and burst into beautiful blooms.

1. Watering

During the spike-forcing period, Phalaenopsis must neither go short of water nor be overwatered. Judge when to water by checking the roots: water again once the roots turn from emerald green to white and the surface feels slightly dry. Follow the drench-through principle, watering until water runs out of the bottom of the pot, and wait until the surface of the potting medium dries before watering again. With sphagnum moss as the medium, water once every 5 - 7days, and with bark as the medium, water once every 3 - 5days.

2. Fertilizing

Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can effectively promote flower bud differentiation. Monopotassium phosphate is commonly used, diluted into a 0.1% - 0.2%solution, and applied once every 7 - 10days as a foliar spray or a root drench

3. Temperature Difference

Keep daytime temperatures at 25 - 30°C, which favors photosynthesis; drop nighttime temperatures to 18 - 20°C to reduce nutrient consumption and stimulate flower bud differentiation. Maintaining an 8 - 10°C temperature differencefor 2 - 3weeks can significantly raise the spike-forcing rate. Temperature can be controlled with the help of open windows, fans or air conditioning. For example, place the Phalaenopsis in a well-ventilated, sunny indoor spot during the day, using natural light to raise the temperature; at night, if the temperature is too high, open a window to ventilate and cool it down, or use a fan to help air circulate, and if necessary use air conditioning for precise temperature control.

4. Plant Condition

Before forcing spikes, check the roots, cut off any rotten, blackened parts, disinfect and repot. It is advisable to choose a mature plant with more than 5healthy, broad leaves, since it has ample nutrient reserves and a higher success rate for spike forcing.

5. Light

From 11am to  - 3pm, use a shade net (shading rate 30% - 50%) to avoid scorching the leaves. At other times, let the plant receive full direct sunlight, ensuring 6 - 8hours of light per day, and turn the pot regularly for even light exposure to promote flower bud development

In addition, during spike forcing, keep the environment ventilated; after the flower spike emerges, moderately raise the humidity to 60% - 80%
