Reasons and Methods for Air-Drying the Roots of Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids)
The fleshy aerial roots of the Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) are the most vulnerable to waterlogging and pathogen infection. Air-drying the roots allows the wounds from pruning to dry and scab over quickly, reducing the risk of black rot, while also regulating root moisture to suit the care needs of different seasons.

I. Air-Drying Roots After Pruning
Method:
1.Root pruning: Use sterilized scissors to cut off brown, soft, mushy roots and hollow roots, keeping the healthy white roots.
2.Air-dry: Spread out the roots and place them in a cool, well-ventilated spot, air-drying for 2-4hours until the wounds are dry and shrunken, and no longer sticky to the touch.
3.Potting: Use a sphagnum moss +bark mixed substrate, place the roots into the pot in a radial pattern, and avoid pressing on the wounds.

II. Air-Drying Roots in Water Culture
Method:
1.Soak the roots to rehydrate: Soak the roots in clean water for 12-24hours with the water level covering the roots2/3, so the shriveled roots can absorb their fill of water.
2.Hang to dry: After removing it, hang it by a string near a window and air-dry in a well-ventilated spot for 5-7days, with the roots fully exposed and not touching any damp object.
3.Return to water culture: After air-drying, put it back in the water culture vase with the water level covering only 1/3of the roots, and change the water once a week.

III. Air-Drying Roots With Controlled Watering
Method:
1.Water lightly: Use a long-spout watering can to water along the edge of the pot until the bottom roots come into contact with 1cmof water.
2.Let it absorb naturally: Let it sit for half a day so the roots take up water on their own, and excess water drains out through the bottom holes.
3.Air-dry and control water: Prop the pot up and raise it off the surface, and air-dry for 5-7days until the substrate is completely dry.

Precautions:
1.Root integrity: When pruning rotten roots, keep the white healthy roots, as over-pruning will cause the plant to topple over; after pruning rotten roots, you can apply carbendazim powder to the wounds, and only proceed after they have dried.
2.Environmental requirements: No direct sunlight during air-drying! High temperatures will bake the roots dry, causing dehydration and death; when humidity is >80%, turn on a fan or air conditioner to dehumidify; during the plum rain season, for example, ventilation must be strengthened.

3.Timing taboos: Do not air-dry roots during the flowering period! It easily causes buds to drop; do not air-dry a newly purchased Phalaenopsis immediately; first let it acclimatize in its original pot for 1week to adapt to the environment.

In short, master these 3root air-drying methods, and Phalaenopsis roots will never rot again.
