How to keep a Phalaenopsis alive when it has few roots? Care tips for bare-root seedlings
Just got abare-root moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) seedling? Don't worry - master these three root-growing methods, and even beginners can grow a spectacular root system.

1. Soaking Method
1.On day one, fill a container with clean water and soak the roots completely12-24hours.
2.On day two, pour out the water and gently wipe the surface moisture off the roots with a paper towel.
Note: in summer, dry the roots in a ventilated spot for 5-7days, until they turn pale and dry; in winter, dry them for 3-5days, to avoid excessive dehydration.

2. Wick Method
1.Wrap the wick around the roots2-3times, with the end hanging down to the bottom of the container
2.Spread 3cmof volcanic rock at the bottom of the container, place the seedling in, then add water without submerging the volcanic rock.
3.Wait until the water dries out completely before adding more, about once every 7-10days.
Note: use a transparent container so you can easily monitor the water level and avoid suffocating the roots; choose a pure cotton wick, as synthetic fibers will damage the roots.

3. Water Level Method
1.Water until the roots at the bottom of the pot touch the water level at 1cm
2.After the water is absorbed naturally, take the seedling out and let the roots dry for 5-7days.
Note: never let water submerge the upper half of the roots or they will rot; when drying the roots, place them in indirect light, not in full sun.

Pruning Rotten Roots:
1.Use sterilized scissors to cut off blackened, softened rotten roots, keeping the white healthy roots.
2.Apply carbendazim powder to the wounds or let them dry for 2hours.
3.After pruning, keep it away from water for at least 3days to avoid infection.

Care Tips:
1. Light: mostly indirect light, best behind a sheer curtain by a window, and avoid strong light in summer.
2. Temperature: 15-30℃ is ideal; in winter it should not drop below 10℃
3. Humidity: when the air is dry (especially in the north), mist around the plant daily to raise humidity.
4.Fertilizing tip: do not fertilize during the bare-root stage! Once new roots grow, use a diluted 1000times orchid-specific fertilizer once a month.

Common Questions:
1.How long does a bare-root seedling take to grow new roots?
Under normal care, 2-4weeks later you can see new roots sprouting.
2.Can a plant still be saved if all its roots have shriveled up?
Cover it with a transparent plastic bag (leave ventilation holes) to keep humidity at 80%1hour each day
3.Can it be planted directly into a flower pot?
It is best to first use sphagnum moss for temporary planting for 1month, and wait until the new roots grow to 5cmbefore potting it up - the survival rate will be higher!
Master these tips, and even a bare-root moth orchid seedling can grow a massive root system and bloom abundantly.
