When growing Phalaenopsis orchids, the key is to grow the roots well. There are several practical methods, such as the upside-down method, the water-contact method and the semi-hydroponic method. Let me introduce them to you below.

Upside-down method:Find a suitable container and place the Phalaenopsis into it upside down, with the head facing down, and try to let the leaves soak in the water. Then put it in a cool, well-ventilated place with soft light, and do not expose it to direct sunlight. Remember to change the water regularly, about2-3days, otherwise the water will stink and that would be troublesome. This is done because Phalaenopsis needs diffused light for photosynthesis, but is afraid of being scorched by strong light. A cool, well-ventilated place can reduce the chance of disease, and changing the water regularly ensures it has a clean environment.

Note: Handle it gently during the process; the leaves and stems of Phalaenopsis are rather fragile and can easily break if you use too much force. In addition, the container used to hold the water should be cleaned in advance to avoid residual bacteria contaminating the plant.

Water-contact method:Place the Phalaenopsis at the edge of the container so that about one third of the roots are in contact with the water surface. Never soak all the roots in water, or they will easily rot. This allows the roots to absorb water while also getting air, so the Phalaenopsis can grow well.

Note: Always pay attention to how the roots are contacting the water surface, and adjust promptly if the water level changes. Also, once the roots show signs of turning black or rotting, immediately cut off the rotten parts and then disinfect the wounds to prevent the situation from getting worse.

Semi-hydroponic method:Use a container without holes, put the Phalaenopsis into it, and keep its roots slightly moist, neither too dry nor too wet. You can use a spray bottle to spray a little water on the roots from time to time, which can stimulate it to grow new roots and make the Phalaenopsis more vigorous.

Note: Control the humidity well; too wet easily breeds mold, while too dry fails to achieve the root-growing effect. In addition, check the root system at intervals, and deal with it promptly if you find pests or diseases. You can prepare some carbendazim solution and regularly disinfect the roots and the container.

It takes time for new roots to grow, possibly from a few weeks to a month. During this period you must be patient and care for it strictly according to the methods described above. As long as you persist in doing these things well, the roots of the Phalaenopsis will grow vigorously and it will bloom beautiful flowers!
