How to Water a Phalaenopsis Orchid: Care Methods and Precautions for the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Region
When growing Phalaenopsis orchids in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, you need to precisely control key factors such as temperature, light, watering and potting medium to ensure the plants grow healthily and bloom abundantly.

1.Temperature: The suitable temperature range for Phalaenopsis growth is 15 to 28 degrees Celsius. The Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region has four distinct seasons, and both the low winter temperatures and the high summer temperatures pose challenges for Phalaenopsis.

When the temperature falls below the suitable range, the leaves of the plant are prone to frost damage, and in severe cases this can even threaten its life. During the high-temperature periods of summer, effective cooling measures need to be taken, such as turning on an air conditioner or placing the plant in a cool, ventilated spot, to create a suitable temperature environment for the Phalaenopsis.

2.Light: Phalaenopsis dislikes direct strong light and prefers a diffused-light environment. The Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region has fairly abundant sunshine, so during care you need to be especially careful not to place the plant right up against glass, because glass tends to trap heat and, under sunlight, will cause heat damage to the Phalaenopsis. You can place it in a spot indoors that is bright but free of direct light, or use shade netting and similar tools to provide moderate shading.

3.Water: Watering should follow the principle of "dry before wet, wet before dry", that is, water when the Phalaenopsis roots turn slightly white; if the roots are still green, there is no need to water. This is because the fleshy aerial roots of Phalaenopsis tolerate waterlogging poorly, and excessive water easily causes root rot, which in turn affects the overall growth of the plant.

4.Potting medium: The potting media traditionally used for growing Phalaenopsis are mainly sphagnum moss and bark. Sphagnum moss has excellent water retention and can continuously supply water to the roots; bark has good air permeability, which benefits root respiration, but its water retention is rather poor. Given the humidity differences across seasons in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, you can flexibly adjust the mixing ratio of sphagnum moss and bark according to actual conditions to meet the growth needs of the Phalaenopsis.

In short, Phalaenopsis likes a warm, humid environment, but its fleshy aerial roots are also extremely sensitive to waterlogging. When growing Phalaenopsis in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, as long as you follow the methods above and care for it attentively, you can help it thrive and produce beautiful blooms.
