What is the difference between the silk floss tree and the kapok tree? The two are actually not the same
Silk floss tree and kapok are often confused because of their similar names and similar appearance. In fact, although both are angiosperms, they differ in morphology, flowering period, growth habits and practical uses.

Differences in morphological characteristics. The silk floss tree has a swollen lower trunk and rough bark densely covered with conical prickles, which is its unique self-protection mechanism. By contrast, the kapok tree has a straight trunk with gray, smooth, prickle-free bark.

As for the leaves, the silk floss tree has palmately compound leaves, usually made up of 3 - 7 leaflets. Each leaflet is obovate to oblong-elliptic, fresh and delicate in color, light green, and thin in texture; the kapok tree also has palmately compound leaves, but the number of leaflets is generally 5 - 7

The two differ noticeably in flower form and color. The silk floss tree bears solitary flowers in the leaf axils, with a pale purplish-red corolla and a white center, and the petals are long-ovate; the kapok tree bears flowers clustered at the branch tips, bright red in color, with thick, fleshy petals.

Differences in flowering period and growth habits. The silk floss tree usually blooms from 11 to 1 of the following year, and its peak bloom falls in the flower-scarce seasons of autumn and winter. It likes a warm, humid, sunny environment and has poor cold tolerance, making it hard to survive in colder regions. It is not demanding about soil and can grow in many soil types, but deep, fertile, well-drained soil helps it thrive even more.

Differences in uses. The silk floss tree has a graceful tree form and delicate, gorgeous flowers, and is often planted as a street tree or ornamental garden tree, adding brilliant color to cities and courtyards.
Besides its ornamental value, the kapok tree's flowers can also be used to make soup, producing a delicious and healthful broth. In addition, because kapok floss has strong fiber toughness, it is widely used in the textile industry.
In short, although the silk floss tree and the kapok tree both cover themselves in blossoms, they have many differences.
