A Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) grown at home has elegant blooms and beautiful colors, and looks especially lovely displayed indoors. But what should you do if you accidentally break the flower spike? Below, let's go over a few ways to save it.

First, look at how the flower spike broke

If the flower spike broke off right at the very base, this situation is a bit tricky. When it breaks at the base, it is separated from the plant's main part, and it is hard for it to get nutrients from the plant again. But if it broke in the middle or higher up, then it can still be saved, because the remaining connected part can still supply some nutrients to the broken spike.

Different situations, different solutions

1.Broken at the base: In this case, just use scissors to cut the broken spike off from the very bottom, leaving no leftover stub at all, otherwise it can easily grow bacteria and get diseased. After cutting, keep the Phalaenopsis in a well-ventilated spot with bright, indirect light and care for it as usual. This way the plant can concentrate its nutrients on other healthy parts, and perhaps after a while it will send up new flower spikes and bloom again.

2.Broken in the middle or higher up: First find a clean, sterilized sharp pair of scissors and cut the broken spot flat, so the wound is small and less likely to get infected. Then find a thin wooden stick or bamboo skewer, just slightly longer than the broken spike, and insert it into the soil in the pot to secure it. Next, use horticultural tape or thin string to gently tie the broken spike and the stick together, giving the broken spike support so it can stand upright and grow again. Be careful not to tie it too tightly, or the flower spike will get damaged.

How to care for it afterward

1.Light: Place the Phalaenopsis in a spot with bright, indirect light, and never let the sun shine on it directly. Indirect light lets the plant carry out photosynthesis normally, helps the wound heal faster, and won't tire the plant out too much.

2.Watering: Remember "water when dry, let it dry out between waterings" - water a little less, and not too often. After the flower spike breaks, the Phalaenopsis's ability to take up water becomes weaker, and if you water too much, the roots can easily rot.

3.Fertilizing: Don't fertilize right after the spike breaks. Wait until you see the plant start to grow new leaves or new roots, then give it some diluted liquid fertilizer to replenish nutrients and help it recover its vitality quickly.

In short, if you handle it according to these methods and care for it well, the Phalaenopsis can still keep looking beautiful and add color to your home!
