Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) is an excellent choice for home decor; simply place it in a vase and it instantly elevates the style of your home. Its blooming period lasts as long as 1-2 months, or even longer, truly earning its reputation as the "lazy person's fresh flower." Below, we'll share how to grow and care for Phalaenopsis in water.

High Water Level

For Phalaenopsis, abundant and high-quality water is crucial. Orchids generally love water, and Phalaenopsis is no exception, requiring a high water level for care. To provide the most suitable growing environment for Phalaenopsis, it is best to use purified or filtered water; this type of water is pure, free of impurities and harmful substances, and can effectively avoid damage to the orchid's roots. Change the water once every 4-5 days to keep the water clean at all times and provide a stable water environment for the orchid's growth.

Trimming the Roots

The health of a Phalaenopsis's roots directly affects its growth. During care, whenever the roots turn yellow, or each time you change the water, you need to trim the roots by 1-2cm. When trimming, be sure to do it carefully, cutting away all the yellowed portions until fresh tissue is exposed. This not only removes damaged and diseased tissue, but also promotes the growth of new roots and enhances the orchid's ability to absorb nutrients.

Vase Placement

A tall vase with a wide mouth provides ample space for the Phalaenopsis's root system, making the plant more stable. Keeping the water level at two-thirds of the vase not only meets the orchid's water needs but also creates an elegant visual effect. Adding HVB to the water at a ratio of 2ml:1L can effectively extend the orchid's blooming period, letting this beauty last longer. Choosing a single-stem vase arrangement is simple yet full of charm, better creating a unique atmosphere and becoming a striking focal point in your home space.

Temperature

Phalaenopsis prefers cool conditions over heat, with the most suitable growing temperature being 18-20°C. Within this temperature range, the orchid's various physiological activities can proceed normally, and the flowers become more vivid and long-lasting. At the same time, be especially careful to avoid direct sunlight; overly strong light will raise the temperature, scorch the orchid's leaves and flowers, and disrupt its growing environment.

Isolation

Phalaenopsis is highly sensitive to ethylene; once exposed to ethylene, the flowers will fade more quickly. Therefore, when caring for Phalaenopsis, keep it away from ripe fruits and vegetables, rotting vegetables, and other flowers in the home that are about to fade, creating an "ethylene barrier" to provide a pure growing environment for the orchid.

First Aid

Sometimes a Phalaenopsis may wilt, and you can save it by rehydrating the flowers a second time. Soak the entire stem and flower heads in water for 3-4 hours, allowing the orchid to fully absorb water and restore its lost vitality. After this second rehydration treatment, the Phalaenopsis can often regain its vigor and continue to bloom beautifully.
