Phalaenopsis orchids have an elegant bearing and brilliant flowers, and if you want them to grow vigorously and bloom successfully, precise fertilizing is key. Below, we will explain the key points of fertilizing Phalaenopsis at each stage.

Seedling stage

To build a solid foundation during the seedling stage, sufficient nutrition is needed. At this stage, nitrogen and potassium fertilizers are the main focus, and a compound fertilizer can also be used. In the early period, apply a dilute nitrogen liquid fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, diluted 3000 - 4000times. Because Phalaenopsis roots absorb weakly, try to follow a pattern of 2 rounds of clear water to 1 round of fertilizer to prevent "root burn."

Growth stage

During the growth stage, Phalaenopsis needs more nutrients and a more varied supply. Nitrogen remains the main nutrient source, and urea, cake fertilizer and similar products are all good nitrogen fertilizer choices. At the same time, phosphorus-potassium fertilizer and calcium fertilizer should also be applied appropriately. For phosphorus-potassium fertilizer, monopotassium phosphate can be used, diluted  3000 times before application. During this period, the concentration of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers can be appropriately increased, diluted to 2000times, following a frequency of 3 rounds of clear water to 1 round of fertilizer, to help Phalaenopsis develop broad leaves and strong stems.

Flower spike emergence stage

Flower spike emergence is a key stage; from spike emergence to bud swelling takes about 3 months. At this time, phosphorus-potassium fertilizer and balanced fertilizer should be used alternately, and calcium fertilizer should also be supplemented appropriately. Phosphorus-potassium fertilizer should be diluted 2000 - 3000times, with a frequency of 3 rounds of clear water to 1 round of fertilizer; chelated calcium should be applied once as a 3000-times solution. If there are 2 - 3 flower buds, apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizer until the first flower opens; if there are more than 5 flower buds, stop fertilizing when half of the flowers have opened.

Post-bloom stage

After the flowers fade, the Phalaenopsis is greatly weakened and needs timely nutrient replenishment to recover its strength. At this time, apply balanced fertilizer and nitrogen fertilizer; a small amount of controlled-release fertilizer can be sprinkled on the surface of the growing medium to continuously provide nutrients to the plant.

In addition, pay attention to temperature when fertilizing. 15℃ - 30℃ is the most suitable range, especially in winter, try to fertilize at noon, and the water temperature should be close to room temperature to prevent root frost damage. Finally, do not forget to prune the spent flowers, cutting about 2 - 3cm above the base of the flower stalk, to reduce nutrient consumption and prepare for the next bloom.

In short, when fertilizing, follow the principle of "weak fertilizer, frequent application" to avoid root damage from concentrated fertilizer. At the same time, combine it with watering, light, temperature and other care conditions, so that the Phalaenopsis can grow strong and healthy.
