Most flower lovers believe that placing a Phalaenopsis orchid on a south-facing balcony is the right thing to do, since there is plenty of light there. However, the result of growing it this way is that it becomes more and more dispirited, the leaves turn limp, and it stops blooming. At this point, has it left you shaking your head in frustration?

In fact, most flowers and plants do indeed like plenty of light, and that is not wrong, but for the Phalaenopsis orchid, it is not the correct answer. At this point, flower lovers may wonder: why is a south-facing balcony not suitable for growing Phalaenopsis orchids? This is mainly because a south-facing balcony has far too much light, while the Phalaenopsis orchid originally grows in tropical rainforests, where the environment is usually dominated by diffused light with no direct sun. So if you place it in the spot with the most intense direct light facing south, it is simply suffering for it. Not only can it not provide the nutrients the orchid needs to grow, it will instead scorch the leaves of the Phalaenopsis orchid, and in severe cases even blooming becomes a problem.

If the balcony position is only south-facing, then you need to be extra careful and try to add a sunshade umbrella, which can effectively reduce the intensity of direct sunlight. When choosing one, you can look for a shade net with moderate light transmittance, so that it does not block all the sunlight, ensuring the Phalaenopsis orchid receives an appropriate amount of diffused light while avoiding the damage caused by direct light.

Secondly, if your balcony space is small and you cannot install a shade net, using curtains to block the light is also a good option. During the day, pull the curtains halfway open, so that sunlight can shine through the gaps in the curtains onto the Phalaenopsis orchid. You can also choose to move it to a relatively shady place during the sunniest time at noon to avoid direct sunlight, and then in the evening move the Phalaenopsis orchid back to a spot with better light so it can receive the soft evening sunlight.

In short, when growing a Phalaenopsis orchid on a south-facing balcony, shading is the most important thing to do, because only if the shading work is done well can the Phalaenopsis orchid be grown well. Of course, when caring for it you also need to coordinate conditions such as humidity, temperature, watering, and fertilizing. Remember, when caring for every potted plant, only with dedicated care will they surely bloom for you in their most beautiful state.
