Today I'm introducing a particularly beautiful plant called the golden shrimp plant (Pachystachys lutea), which flower shop owners also call the golden pagoda and the yellow shrimp flower. Just from the name alone, doesn't it already feel like it must look out of the ordinary? That's right, the golden shrimp plant has a pagoda-shaped appearance, and each bract is paired with golden-yellow petals, looking like glittering gold, and paired with white petals resembling lobster claws, it looks especially eye-catching and stylish.

The golden shrimp plant is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Acanthaceae family. It is native to Mexico and Peru, and it is not very cold-tolerant, so it mostly grows in southern regions. In terms of flower language, because its appearance is golden and bright, it carries an auspicious and festive symbolism, and many people use it for decoration on celebratory occasions. How do you care for it after bringing it home?

First of all, the golden shrimp plant loves a hot and humid environment. In terms of light, it is best to give it bright indirect light, but it can also adapt to shadier spots. As for growing temperature, the golden shrimp plant can bloom brightly between 18°C and 30°C. On hot summer days above 35°C, avoid direct sunlight, otherwise its delicate leaves can easily get scorched and become unattractive. Winter is its "nemesis" - if the temperature drops below 10°C, the leaves are very likely to suffer frost damage, so in winter it must be kept indoors and kept warm.

As for watering, the golden shrimp plant's blooming period is from April to August. During this time it likes a moderately humid environment, so in a dry indoor space you should mist it regularly to raise the air humidity around it. The best watering state is when the soil is slightly moist - never water it too wet, otherwise waterlogging will cause root rot. Beginner gardeners can feel the surface soil with a finger; if it is dry, then it is time to water.

As for soil, if it becomes compacted later on, replace it promptly. An organic all-purpose potting soil is recommended, as this type of soil has good aeration. At the same time, buy some flower pots with plenty of drainage holes at the bottom, which can help with aeration.

Although fertilizing is indispensable when growing flowers and plants, don't be too frequent with the golden shrimp plant. During its growing season, that is spring and summer, just give it a balanced liquid fertilizer once every 4 to 6 weeks.
