Do Phalaenopsis Orchids Need Soaking? A Detailed Guide to the Correct Soaking Method
For many gardening enthusiasts, the Phalaenopsis orchid is undoubtedly a beautiful and popular flower. However, whether Phalaenopsis orchids need soaking and how to carry out soaking care often puzzles many growers.
Whether a Phalaenopsis orchid needs soaking depends mainly on its growth stage and care requirements. Under normal circumstances, Phalaenopsis orchids do not need frequent soaking. However, in specific situations, such as when transitioning from potting medium to water culture, or when treating the roots of a Phalaenopsis orchid, soaking becomes a necessary step. But note that the soaking time and method must be strictly controlled to avoid harming the Phalaenopsis orchid.

Phalaenopsis Orchid Soaking Method
Preparation Stage
Root pruning: First, the roots of the Phalaenopsis orchid need to be pruned, removing rotten roots and hollow roots to ensure root health.
Root cleaning: After pruning, rinse the roots clean with water to remove residual potting medium and soil.

Semi-Hydroponic Stage
First soaking: Place the cleaned Phalaenopsis orchid roots into clean water, keeping the water level below the roots, for the first soaking. The soaking time should not be too long, generally controlled at about 3 and a half hours, until the roots turn completely green.
Cyclic soaking: After the first soaking, remove the Phalaenopsis orchid and drain the water, keeping the roots dry. Soak again the next day, repeating this process until the fifth day. Starting from the fifth day, increase the soaking time to 5 hours; after soaking, leave a water level of about half a centimeter, keeping the upper roots dry.
Observation and adjustment: Throughout the semi-hydroponic stage, closely observe the condition of the roots. If rotten roots or poor root condition are found, prune promptly and control water. Once the roots are smooth with no wounds, and ideally new roots have grown, you can move on to the full hydroponic stage.

Full Hydroponic Stage
Water level control: In the full hydroponic stage, the water level must be strictly controlled. After soaking in high-level clean water, pour off most of the water, leaving one third of the water level. Then follow the pattern of "soak for three days, withhold water for one day" for care, repeating 2-3 times. Then follow the pattern of "keep one third of the water level for seven days, withhold water for one day" for care, repeating 2-3 times. Finally, withhold water for one day every half month, until the Phalaenopsis orchid has fully adapted to the hydroponic environment.
Notes: During the full hydroponic stage, keep the water clean and avoid using tap water containing chlorine or impurities. At the same time, regularly check the condition of the roots and promptly prune rotten and diseased roots.

In addition to soaking care, the care of Phalaenopsis orchids also requires attention to the following points:
Light: Phalaenopsis orchids like indirect light; avoid direct sunlight.
Temperature: Maintain a suitable temperature and avoid temperatures that are too high or too low, which can harm the Phalaenopsis orchid.
Humidity: Maintain relatively high air humidity, which helps the Phalaenopsis orchid grow and bloom.
Fertilizing: Proper fertilizing can provide the nutrients the Phalaenopsis orchid needs and promote its growth and blooming.
Phalaenopsis orchids need soaking care under specific circumstances, but the soaking time and method must be strictly controlled. At the same time, other care details also need attention to ensure the healthy growth and beautiful blooming of the Phalaenopsis orchid.
